KL Rahul is a little over three months short of completing a decade in international cricket. He's played exactly 50 Test matches and scored eight centuries, including a recent classic in Centurion. But an average of 34.08 over this period is a reflection of his unfulfilled potential. It also opens him up to constant scrutiny of his position in the XI. So much so that despite scoring an excellent 86 in his last appearance in this format before an injury forced him out of the remainder of the England series, the 32-year-old already has younger competitors - like Sarfaraz Khan and even Dhruv Jurel - breathing down his neck for his spot in the Indian middle order in the new season.

 

For India captain Rohit Sharma, the Rahul situation is more straightforward. "You don't need too think too much about it," he said two days out from the season-opening Chennai Test against Bangladesh. "Look, when we select an XI, you know, a lot of thought goes behind what people have done, what people have done for 10-15 years, how many runs they have scored in the last two or three series, what is the form and everything...

 

"What kind of experience an individual brings to the table, and who is the match winner, who can have an impact in the game more than anyone else. So, those are the things that we usually discuss and we discuss based on what we feel is right in terms of an individual player. And yeah, some things are just there in front of you, you just have to pick them up and put it in the block, as simple as that."

 

"I think with KL, the kind of quality he has, everyone knows about it. And I can only talk about since I started captaining, the kind of messaging that has been given to him from our side was very simple: we wanted him to play all games. And we want him to bring the best out of him. And it is our duty as well to bring the best out of him. It's important that we give him that clear message that this is what we expect from you. And I think we've done that.

 

"And since his comeback now, he's played a great knock - he got a 100 in South Africa. Got an 80 in that first Test match in Hyderabad and then got injured unfortunately. Didn't play any of the games after that. So, it's there for us to see. The guy's got the talent. And it's important that we give him clear messages every time we get an opportunity to speak to him. And that's what we've done.

 

"And I hope he continues from where he left in Hyderabad. He's got the game to play. The spin, the seamers. So, I don't see any reason why he can't flourish in Test cricket. Obviously, the opportunities are there now. Obviously, spending so much time in international cricket, it's for him also to understand now how he wants to take his career forward."

Moral of the tale - Rahul will never be dropped as long as Rohit Sharma is captain. Regards Rahul as a younger skinnier version of himself....

It is similar to Kohli backing Rohit when he was not as successful in middle order as he is as a opener.

 

Rohit is doing doing same by backing KL.

 

What KL needs to do is bat big, averaging in the 30's is an insult to Indian batting legacy whatever the conditions. Gill also has to step up also.

No 5 is the musical chair between KL, Sarfu & Jurel.

Absolutely. He is ahead of  Sarfarz, Jurel, Pant in the pecking order. Will bat at #5 for sure. Pant will play ahead of Jurel as well.

Problem with this loser Kela is that he isn't good enough to be included as a specialist batsman (in any format).    Nor can be included as a WK coz his keeping skills are worse than a club level WK.  Not sure what Rohit & the TM think.

He is not ahead of Pant in tests even for rohit or the management. Pant is perhaps the most valuable test asset we have after bumrah

How is kela ahead of pant in tests? A somberi averaging 34 after 50 tests

KL is already the designated future Test captain once Rohit rests his belly on the vadapav counter. It doesn't matter what his performances look like in the meantime.

no it matters.previously he would get dropped and somehow ended back into the team many many times because we truly didnt have any replacement for him,now we have a viable replacement in Sarfaraz and the the pressure is very great on Rahul.

Pant is coming back as after 2 years. KL is ahead as a batsman in MO. Team doesn’t have many in the MO. Hence. KL will not keep for sure
