On the back of the Duleep trophy, and in light of a shadow A team touring Australia (i think?)

Who makes the cut for an A squad?

How will the below fare? And who would you change

Easwaran (c)

Sudharshan

Paddikal

Indrajith

Sarfaraz

Porel (I'd like it to be Wadkar but bizarrely doesn't get a look in even for Duleep)

Suthar

Rana

Avesh

Dayal

Kamboj

Bhui

Rawat

Sundar ( or Saurabh much better bowling option/ or Kotian)

Arshdeep

Saini

The purpose of A teams is to find backups for the Senior Team. With this in mind, my bowling picks are ....

Harshit

Mayank ( if fit ) / Umran

Khaleel

Arshdeep

Suthar

Kotian

Saransh

R.Chahar

.... Want to try one express pacer

.... Ashwin is 38, so we need to find an offie who can bat. Hence 2 such spinners.

Great thread and post.

Keeping in mind that the goal is two-pronged - shadow-team and testing future prospects - Musheer Khan should be in there (for the latter goal). Given that Sarfaraz is likely to be in the main XVI, Musheer could take his place in your A-team

He is still 19, Rinku should be trained for red-ball. He can play like Pant and change the test in one session

RKS has an excellent FC avg and SR. But, in the couple of opportunities he has got in domestics recently, he has not capitalized. It's a lot of pressure, but one must perform in such situations. He is still one of my favorite Indian cricketers but right now it just seems like T20 is his home.

MK made a huge impact in his very first knock in Duleep, proving that he has the goods. Now is the time to give him more experience at the highest level.

Moreover, if memory serves me right, most Indian batsmen who have made lasting impacts started in the team b/w ages of 19-22. Those that start in their mid to late 20s don't seem to stick around.

I have mixed views about Mayank and Umran, whilst we need to be braver in picking guys with unique skill sets, Mayank is still "learning" how to bowl 10 to 15 overs a day and Umran also developing red ball smarts... Things that need to be done in domestic cricket not A team level.

Wish offies with better bowling credentials were given more chances too : Mohit Redkar? Or Yuvrajsingh Dodiya , though he can't bat

The next A-team series is in Australia. The express bowers can learn a lot by bowling on bouncy pitches and this opportunity won't come often.

Moreover, apart from the pacers I mentioned, I don't find any other Test or ODI prospect among the Duleep Trophy bowlers.

What's this A team "level" ****? It's one thing to say international cricket isn't the place to learn the trade but A team matches? Seriously? WTF

How did Washington Sundar fall so low in the pecking order? He already showed great temperament in tough situations in his first few Tests. He is still a good bat who can bowl decent off-spin. May not be the level of Ashwin but cannot be discarded completely.

Spinners with batting ability is a "must" now.

Even pacers are expected to bat. Bumrah is an exception

One reason is injuries, he was injured too often.

Second reason is he has no connections. He isnt regular part of any IPL team as well.

So no lobbying by social media, not many prominent ex-cricketers talk about him.

Injury is one reason- can not be trusted in a test with injury concerns, but he had all the hype around him around 3/4 years back. Specially for a off-spinner he had alot of hype.

SM in Ind does not lobby for bowlers in general, if that was the case Bhumrah would have been all over the place -promotions, sponsorships, ads etc, bcci would have been looking for similar kind of bowlers.

Hard to play as just an off-spinner in white-ball cricket , off spin has to come from a proper batter, lacks hitting ability for a no. 6/7/8 batter and amongst the slowest mover in  the field.

No IPL team plays an off-spinner, Ashwin play because its RR  and he is Ashwin (He is RR's only proper Ind Intnl player) ,jaiswal jst made it to Ind team and still a newbie

That's why you pick them in India A to learn that. India A isn't for finished products. It's for upcoming young players.

SM lobbying does happen for spinners as well. There are youtube channels like "Sports Tak" who were openly lobbying for Chahal's inclusion.
They're an influential channel as folks like Ganguly, Gavaskar, Bhajji etc have expressed their views.

On the other side, zonal preferences and sifarishi players exists since eternity. How Mukesh Kumar jumped the queue and suddenly became an "all-format" bowler despite mediocre white ball returns in domestics is visible. Akashdeep who has better numbers was a non-existent entity unless he played IPL and showed his skills. Then also he is just seen as a red ball bowler.

Mukesh is different case, do not think there is any other player who is/was selected for Ind in all 3 formats before playing IPL. Zonal preferences are gone now.

Now its IPL franchisees thing, v.sure Gangully and DC were behind this. Mukesh was not talked about name in Ind cricketing circles, neither he had some 1 off great performance which kind of elevates players chances for selection. Have posted this multiple times that his selection is v.strange nor per the norms of Ind cricket.

Talking about Chahal, its just the lack of understanding about what he brings to the table, After initial success of Chahal and Kuldeep teams started playing them better and then started hitting them for runs, they were not same pair that if one would take 4/5 wkts in one match other would win the next match.

Good teams capable of hitting the ball from crease realized that Kuldeep can be countered by playing from crease as not to falter in the flight let the ball bounce then play the shots his speeds after pitching were manageable. So he was to be dropped. At one time this was an open secret only Ind media and experts were living in illusion that its not right to break the pair and the other thing was Ind's think batting line-up plus both of them do not offer anythiing with bat or are v.average as fielders.

Chahal kept on playing those bilateral series only to be dropped frm ICC events because of lack of planning and understanding of chahal's role.

Heard many ind commentators were calling him Ind's best white-ball bowler or wkt taker after the loss and early exit in that T20 WC. Its just that media and some Ind commentators do not understand the difference in bilateral series , IPL and ICC events.

In bilateral ind can select a 18 member squad, not all top batters plays in those series, In IPL and in Intnl most of his wkts come from bowling wide and aout of reach of batters

this works against Ind or domestic batters in IPL or aginst batters who are not able to hit 6/4 from the crease and does not have good off-side play. Which does nt work against top sides with powerfull hitters of the ball. He does not threaten inside/outside edge he does not target wkt.

And yes he/his pr may be working with some media/social media or influencers, but in general Ind SM does not hype bowlers -Just Imagine if some batter had a Shami or Bhumrah like WCs.

Gavaskar was advocating for arshdeep's selection in test

I find it really weird that Ganguly and DC backed Mukesh of all players, that too an extent he played all three formats as if he is a legend. Even if this was a franchise based decision, it just feels so idiotic that a bang average player was shoved to the indian national team just because he was a quota from certain zone/franchise.

Regarding Chahal, I always had a feeling about him that he is very good in feeding off the pressure, but he can't be leader of an attack. If he can remain in shadow of any other class spinner, he can do well. The minute there is focus on him, he will falter to perform. That was always something going against him as he is ssemi-skilled in only one dept, and is extremely poor in other 2 (not even average, extremely poor).
What works for him though that he is a very much SM active personality, that helps a lot in attracting attention from the sponsors. Which again brings money, simple business.

You are right that we don't hype our bowlers. Every cricketing nation on this planet have their biggest heroes as bowler, except us. Even a 135kph bowler of Australia or England will be hyped as a 145kph speed demon, while our 150kph bowlers are being called as fast medium. Though, there is one more reason I suspect, that is our bowlers aren't as vocal as our batters. They don't fist their pumps, hurl abuses, thump chests or make comical faces after taking a wicket. Hence, they're less talked and people (specially the casual fans of post IPL era) find it boring.

I am 100 percent sure that mayank and umraan both should go in the A tour to Australia.

145+ pacers don't need 20 overs a day , if they can bowl 3 spells of 4 overs each and 12 to 14 overs, they can take 5 wickets if they can be accurate and become Game changers.

Both these guys have potential to be in india 15 and hence if they are fit and they perform , they can be picked in the indian team
