Happy Deepavali.  First time in a while i woke up early , took shower, offered prayers to god , by lighting oil lamp.  Had badam halwa and murukku (both made at home). Talked to friends and family in India.

Murukku = what is known as Chakkri to the Gujjus?
@zen @Laaloo

Basically besan/gram flour fried as a savoury over groundnut or sesame oil.

What oil is used in Tamil Nadu, traditionally speaking, for the Murukku?

I guess so. When I ate Murukku, I thought I ate Chakri … Maybe it is more spicy :hmmm:

No no no no ... totally incorrect. That may be murukkulu, but not murukku

A proper murukku (kai murukku) is made with a rice flour/urad flour blend mixed with water and butter to get a light crispiness. Once the the dough is ready, you take a little piece, put a bit of kumkum on it and save it for Ganapati. Then you hand-twist it into the shape shown below, and deep fry.

As for oil, probably peanut oil or sunflower oil in TN, but coconut oil in Kerala.

Chakli is a Karnataka dish appropriated by Gujjus. They couldn’t make it round, it broke to small pieces. They can’t pronounce the La in ChakLi and replaced it with easier ra!
