After NZ series, Jadeja was looking sad and lamented that he never thought India would lose a home series with him playing. Contrast that to Ro's 12 saal mein ek baar allowed hai BS. 

 

Kohli chooses when to play and when to go on vacation.

 

Moreover, Ashwin/Jadeja aren't darlings of the public, Ro-Ko are pampered the most by fans, PR, media, experts, sponsors. How is it fair that during times of crisis, majority hate/anger is directed towards Ash/Jaddu? Truth be told, our bowlers have always been the lower castes of Indian cricket, and soft targets when things go south. Horses for courses for bowlers, but batsmen can escape 5 years of underperformance. 

 

All Ashwin would have wanted was the WTC title which was unfairly denied to him (2023) when he was actually looking good.

 

I can't think of a cricketer who deserved the WTC title more than Ashwin (and Jadeja).

 

When that's almost gone and you won't be picked and kept on tenterhooks till the end, what's the point.

 

You pick dud bats in the team for years and keep dropping bowlers, naturally chickens will come home to roost....and guess who pays the price?

And in this case it was Ashwin (who unfortunately declined quite a bit at an unfortunate time).

 

Before India left for Aus, considering the reports coming from BCCI, I said Ashwin should announce immediate retirement as a giant FU to the management.

 

And now it has come.

 

The timing is good tho.

 

We escaped in Gabba. The environment is not all gloom and doom. Great time to retire.

 

Irony is that even this pale shadow of Ashwin wasn't actually bad in Adelaide.

 

2.9 rpo against Aus who faced ZERO pressure (due to our bats shitting the bed again) and our pacers (except Bummy) leaking 4-5 rpo from the other end. 

 

Head thrashed him for a bunch of sixes or else he was even tighter than his figures suggest. Got Marsh...may be Head with some luck.

 

Compare that to performance of all spinners in this series (so far).

 

Irony is that if you dropped Roko and kept Jaddu, Sundar, Nitish Reddy and Ash in the playing XI...

 

We get to strengthen our batting, bowling, captaincy and likely our catching too.

 

That's how bad we are right now.

 

No wonder he chose to retire and walk away from this circus.

Exactly.. Some reporter was asking Gavaskar that Ashwin could have broken Kumble's record if he stayed for 1-2 years. But Ashwin clearly saw that Washington was ready and he didn't want to block Washington's progress. 

 

The only thing is that maybe it would have helped had he stayed with the team in the dressing room through the end of the series, to maybe even mentor Washi as required.. But to each his own. It might have been an emotional time and he might have chosen to be with family.

Or maybe, didn't want to loom like a shadow over Washi, and wanted the latter to shine. When it's time to go, it's time to go......Washi must have spent enough time with him to get the mentoring, let him spread his wings now.

Don't know why people are questioning the timing of his retirement !!! This is a W move by him, and for the benefit of Indian cricket, and Indian cricket culture. 

 

Drawn match, so team morale not down, no elaborate drama or PR plants, Aussie curators have rendered even Lyon ineffective. 8 days gap before next test, so BCCI can fly in a substitute as well. 

 

Washi is more than ready to take over. One of the most exciting test talents in Indian cricket.

Champion guy was in the squad for two World cup wins (2011 and 2024 T20), but wasn't in the playing XI for either, although he deserved to be in the XI for both.

Even 2023 ODI WC, he presence in the XI might have made the difference on a slow pitch against left handed Travis Head.

He played a couple of games in 2011 WC, including the QF against Aussies, he dismissed Watson and Ponting. 

 

Was he in squad in 2024? Don't think so.

Very wealthy cruel. Let's not make a sob story out of someone who had 15 years of international contracts, 20+ years of national cricket and an ongoing, very lucrative, IPL contract. All that for an adult to *play* a game they love...

 

Ashwin is going to have more opportunities than he knows what to do with. He's probably already sitting on some great offers. 

 

On a rainy day in Australia with 45 cameras, live feed to the world and buzzing internet. Lots of attention, appreciation and coverage for the retirement. Rainy day without much cricket gave him even more attention. Not a bad way to go. 

 

Sob story is for a corporate worker that retires after 45 years and has nothing to call their own even after that many years.

ATG- kind of like Kapil Dev of the modern era in the sense that, just like Kapil who had respect of his peers, has a mass following among casual fans but still the so called intellectual fans use stuff like HTB etc. 500+ wickets and 7 100s is an incredible feat even if you achieve that playing in your backyard against equally skilled teams. Let’s celebrate his legacy and avoid toxicity for the day.
