He knew he was #3 spinner how things went. Its good time to retire! Tells you one thing, if batsmen can also be warming bench if they aren't in form or conditions don't suit them, they would be retiring at right time too. 

 

All it would take is Kohli to be benched next match and Sydney will be his last.

Skill wise Ashwin is still the number 1 spinner in India. He did not get the same privilege as Lyon, who was picked purely based on his bowling skill..

He def could have played many more tests if our batsmen were batsMEN enough. He averages under 30 in England, how many offies have that record in England ?

Still he didn't play a single match, even a single match out of 5 in 2021-22 series there.

One can always speculate. Anyway since when has Rohit become the beacon of truth? Now, more than ever, Rohit will have reason to deflect attention from himself. 

 

Only takeaway here is that Aswhin has somewhat redeemed himself from NZ disaster by walking away, and giving space to some youngster (Washi/Axar/Kuldeep) to shine. We know how difficult it is to make big players exit the stage in Indian cricket.

Also it is not unreasonable to be unhappy when you don't feel wanted. So I don't think Ashwin is wrong.

Pisses me off when Jadeja/Ashwin are lumped with Ro-Ko.

 

One series loss and Ashwin has the self awareness to walk away. 

 

After NZ series, Jadeja was looking sad and lamented that he never thought India would lose a home series with him playing. Contrast that to Ro's 12 saal mein ek baar allowed hai BS. 

 

Kohli chooses when to play and when to go on vacation.

 

Moreover, Ashwin/Jadeja aren't darlings of the public, Ro-Ko are pampered the most by fans, PR, media, experts, sponsors. How is it fair that during times of crisis, majority hate/anger is directed towards Ash/Jaddu? Truth be told, our bowlers have always been the lower castes of Indian cricket, and soft targets when things go south. Horses for courses for bowlers, but batsmen can escape 5 years of underperformance.

Whatever be the reason, I am just glad at least one senior has the conscience to know he is blocking the place of a younger, hungrier player. The correct decision has been made !!!!

 

I wonder how Rohit, Kohli make eye contact with guys like Jurel, Sarfaraz who have done reasonably well in limited chances and offer more upside to Indian cricket.

100%.  Great post. I am amazed that Ashwin is still feeling the hurt of losing NZ series while Ro and Ko have merrily moved on.

No.1 series winner for Ind, Alongside Jadeja as the reason for making Ind unbeatable in test at home. 

Batted well when team was in need for runs.

 

Could have played few more series, but a good time to retire when he was still on the top. Big shoes to fill for any1 taking his place.
