CG Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 For first time in decades we have a bunch of stroke makers.Allthough Dravid was designated holding batsman sachin,v.v.s could do the job. Then we had pujara .Rohit was able to do the job in england but he has faded .We need one proper test batsman amoung strokemakers. BacktoCricaddict Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 No doubt. I am myself guilty of denigrating guys like pujara for their slowness, but there are times you need a stubborn, tough as nails character.
vvvslaxman Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 There is a thread on this velu and The Dark Horse 2
Vickydev Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Sundar should be #3 long term I feel. Has the game for it over a flashy player like Gill
singhvivek141 Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 We are missing "batsman"...doesn't matter if defensive or aggressive. Rohit & Kohli are like ambassador car with flat tyres...

lemsip Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Definitely missing a solid defensive batsman in the Pujara, Dravid mould. Have been having this discussion on another thread of the bizarre expectation of a freewheeling batsman like Pant to switch on their Pujara mode whenever the situation demands as if that is really easy for anyone to do.

Pant has great defense. Problem is not just defense. It is the temperament. First of all Pujara is not a natural hook or pull shot player. He doesn't play expansive drives by nature. When it is not natural you won't play those shots even if it is there to be hit. So you basically need strokeless wonders. Because their default game is defensive game. Default game of Gill, Rohit, Kohli, Pant attacking. You could see how Sundar bats. His default game is defensive much like Murali vijay's default game. They are less likely to committ basic errors. You need a reasonbly good ball to get them out. This was expected even before the series started. "Who would play the role of Pujara". Surprisingly KL Rahul popped up. But problem with Rahul is he doesn't make it big or he doesn't maintain consistency throughout the series. So he was basically poor man's pujara.
Trichromatic Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Perth test didn’t need any defensive player. Lord 1
maniac Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 You need a batsman with brains who can play all situations not attacking or defensive type one dimensional types.

Nope, we're missing 2 batters at the moment. How would you describe Kohli and Rohit at the moment? Are they strokemakers? Nope. They're tailenders. We're missing 2 batters of any kind and it's tough to win when you've 5 no. 11s in the team - Rohit, Kohli, and our 3 pacers. vvvslaxman 1

Pujara can score quicker when needed without much risks. Dravid could do too. But your default game should be defensive. If your default game is attacking then you are a riskier batsman.

In every series there are underperformers .The point being the direction we are going copying bazball ,there has to be balance .Their has to be an anchor.

IIRC you wrote that you are English. I doubt if you followed just how Pujara declined even post the 2020-21 BGT series. His footwork was completely gone, which led to many dismissals vs incoming deliveries, vs spin, and more. On current form, Sundar is a better defensive player than he is Ultimate_Game 1

But not every series has the same two culprits, especially Kohli. We won BGT 2020-21 coz Kohli ran away else we would've lost that too. Kohli and Rohit (away) have been perpetual underperformers forever and they're still in the team. No team can overcome playing with 9 players continuously.
