The word super is one of the most commonly used expression in TN to describe anything. . So i am not surprised super there. But not sure where kings came from. kosingh Posted June 15, 2025 Posted June 15, 2025 The team names have been correctly chosen for the Indian audience. Mass appeal. In fact I am surprised they didn't go with desi names. Delhi Dhamakas. I suppose you can't alienate the overseas audience either

There are a million indian names which sound great than thinking about kings in today's day and age. BacktoCricaddict 1

Why not something like that, or a Cholans/Chozhans? Our people at decision making level lack creativity. What does KnightRiders even mean? I mean Bengal is world famous for its Royal Bengal Tigers. Why not a simple Bengal Tigers with Tiger as mascot? Even a 6 year old can come up with that. At least Gujarat Lions name was apt, due to the Asiatic lion population in that state. Kochi Tuskers as well. vvvslaxman and BacktoCricaddict 2

KnightRiders might actually be my favorite team name. No idea what it means. But at least it's creative and atypical than the typical name that has kings, royal, super or something similar. Knightriders does, however, sound more like the name of a cycling team. Edited June 16, 2025 by kosingh

JazzyB Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 mumbai indians has for to be the worst frnachise name of all time. Zero idea zero creativity just ego driven. What is it supposed to even mean? Thats like saying Boston Americans in NBA to make matters worse they carry this name over to other leagues with teams such as mumbai indians new york or mumbai indians cape town despite those teams being in different cities so now you have a team with two city names and indians somewhere in between at least with knightriders or super kings they drop the kolkata or chennai and call them los Angeles Knight Riders or Texas Super Kings rollingstoned 1
goose Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 how anyone can support this contrived nonsense is beyond me!

I suppose you can't alienate the overseas audience either Indian audiences still find "englis" names cooler. so why would a team bother with a desi name like 'Dhamaka' no matter how good or catchy. Thats the reality of what is 'popular' culture. The wheel hasn't turned fully quite yet, if it ever will. BacktoCricaddict 1

The best team names reflect something about the city or region. That's why - as @Gollum said - names like Gujarat Lions, Kochi Tuskers, Chennai Veerans etc make sense. Even in American sports, some team names are spot-on - Cowboys, 49ers, Steelers, Packers, Panthers, Pistons, Seahawks, Dophins, erstwhile Supersonics, Lakers when they were in Minnesota etc. Others like Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals make no sense. Who has ever seen a lion or bengal tiger in the American midwest? But, at least, they are powerful animals and not some homage to generic royalty like the Sacramento Kings. The worst one ever might be the erstwhile Charlotte Bobcats, apparently named for their owner Bob Johnson. If nothing - there are so many vicious or cute animals/birds in India that can be chosen. Tigers, Cobras, Vipers, Eagles, etc. Heck, RCB should rename themselves the Bengaluru Kingfishers - homage to the beer and to its most famous fisherman-King Kohli.
