rollingstoned Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 ‘Bumrah bowls 5 overs and waits for Joe Root to come out’: Gambhir, Gill slammed; ‘If Ben Stokes can bowl 9 overs…’ Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill criticised for not going in for the kill and not using Jasprit Bumrah enough in the Lord's Test. England captain Ben Stokes led from the final day of the Lord's Test against India as he bowled close to 20 overs. The all-rounder did not keep the ball down as he kept charging in to keep the visitors at bay. He was eventually named the Player of the Match after England registered a 22-run win to go 2-1 up in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Stokes also played knocks of 44 and 33 in the Lord's Test, and his all-round effort is the talk of the town. Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill criticised for not going in for the kill and not using Jasprit Bumrah enough in the Lord's Test. (@BCCI X) Citing the example of Ben Stokes and how he bowled 9.2 and 10 overs in his two spells on the final day, former India pacer Irfan Pathan criticised the team management and captain Shubman Gill for not utilising Jasprit Bumrah enough. Bumrah bowled 43 overs in the Lord's Test. It also must be mentioned that the No.1-ranked Test bowler also dished out 43.4 overs in the series opener in Headingley. He was rested for the Edgbaston contest, which India won by 336 runs. However, Pathan feels India should have gone for the kill and used Jasprit Bumrah to try to bundle out England cheaply in the first and second innings. Bumrah returned with a five-wicket haul in the first innings, during which England posted 387 runs on the board. In the second innings, Bumrah returned with two wickets in 16 overs. Pathan feels the Indian pacer could have been brought earlier into the attack in the second innings, and one shouldn't have waited for Joe Root to come out. “Ben Stokes bowled a marathon 9.2 over spell in the morning on day five. What a player he is. He bowls, bats and executes a crucial run out of Rishabh Pant, but there is no talk of workload management. But with India, it is not like that. Bumrah bowls five overs and waits for Joe Root to come out to bat when you need to control the game in the second innings," Pathan said on his YouTube channel. “It was disappointing. His workload was managed, having not played at Edgbaston. When you play a match, there is no workload. You have to win at all costs. The Indian camp could have done that better,” he added. Irfan Pathan also lauded Jofra Archer for bowling a marathon spell on the final day of the Lord's game despite playing a Test after four years. Jofra Archer dismissed Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar on Day 5 to send India on the backfoot. Jofra Archer bowled with great speed, and his pace rattled the Indian middle and lower order. “Archer was playing a Test match after four years, but he did not stop. He bowled a six-over spell in the morning before returning to bowl again. Ben Stokes did not think about workload at all, if he can bowl nine overs, hum toh peeche rah gaye (Indian pacers were left behind),” Pathan said. India and England will next square off in the fourth Test of the five-match series in Manchester, beginning July 23. Frustrated and tweaker 2
lemsip Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 That's a valid point. Captains are constantly worrying about managing his workload even when he is on the field. Stokes who is nowhere near the bowler Bumrah is sets the opposite example. Even a 36 year old Woakes kept running in for 3 matches in a row where their workload has been much larger. If Bumrah is not physically fit enough to shoulder a normal test match load which can increase depending upon the match situation and cannot be available for many matches, it is better that India identifies a different group to lead the core bowling attack. Before long, it might become inevitable that he focusses on the white ball game. His spells are great to watch but they are not helping India win any tests. tweaker and Frustrated 1 1
ungboysj Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 Yes it's an issue Remember steyn also bowling huge effort spells when match was in crucial stage Unfortunately siraj akashdeep are not good enough to lead the attack We need to look beyond
Lone Wolf Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 Fact is that cupboard is pretty bare to look for alternatives. India is seriously handicapped when it comes to test class fast bowlers. Vk1 and BacktoCricaddict 2
goose Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 bumrah is a deadly white ball bowler. if his back goes his IPL income goes too. he wants to play all formats. this isn't controversial - bumrah said this to DK in the Sky interview before this series

putrevus Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 (edited) Bumrah was never the bowler who could put team on his back and drag across the finish line.Under pressure he has shrunk many times. Bowling in these conditions means fast bowlers need to stand up in both innings. There are no spinners to bail them out.You have to come back and bowl spell after spell. How many spells he bowled during 371 plus chase. Akashdeep did in 2nd test in both innings. But he could not replicate it in 3rd, was missing in both innings. vvvslaxman Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 Bumrah infact no India has that stamina to bowl that many overs on the trot. Last i remember was Shami bowling a 11 overs spell in England. Every over was fiery. If you give 11 overs to any of these guys they will be targeted by opposition after 6th or 7th over. I don't think even CUmmins could have done what Stokes did. Bowling at 90 mph for that long. That guy pushed his body to limits which even English team management didn't want. He genuinely felt he let India off the hook from 211/5 in the last match because him not bowling much. So he took it upon himself and bowled in this match. Bumrah is just back from injury. It is a differnet kind of injury. Let us not compare all the injuries the same. If you don't want Bumrah just drop him and play someone else instead of throwing your premiere bowler under bus. It is the kind of coaching that ruin team spirit. Vk1 1

He can easily retire from Tests and just focus on IPL like Deepak Chahar, Bhuvi and still rack money. He has no real incentive playing Tests. He is playing. We should be appreciative of his honest effort to still play Tests. If you don't want him drop him. Let us play others. Tillu, Manucrick and bouncers 3
ungboysj Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 (edited) If india looses this series with bgt and england both lost and next big series away years ,maybe he should retire from test He has achieved Australia test series win away . Won't achieve english series win Won T20 wc Cna focus entirely on ipl and 2027 world cup He is already all time great Edited July 16, 2025 by ungboysj
Stan AF Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 Looking at the posts here in ICF, we should send some of our eminent members to play in the 4th test. Vk1 1
vvvslaxman Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 Fast bowling is harder job than chasing 8th stump line for 5 years. Throwaib_Chuckter, express bowling, Manucrick and 3 others 6
putrevus Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 If he is in self preservation mode and bowling then he might not be going at 100%. If he cannot commit 100% to tests then maybe he is better off retiring from tests. He can only answer that question. I simply don't get, how he can he be certain he takes breaks he will be better off injury wise. Let him play t20s .
R!TTER Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 Fitness has always been an issue with him & despite his lovers saying he's giving it all - I don't believe he is! Remember his "brand value" increases as a 3 format player - why do you think BRat got stuck to his captaincy when clearly his batting form was in the gutters since 2020

Expecting one player to perform everytime and win everytime is not ok, no one did that even for Bradman The hate is unbelievable, particularly for someone who supported a player who was a passenger in the team for 5+ years rollingstoned, diga, express bowling and 2 others 5
New guy Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 Bumrah is not like Stokes or Woakes or Steyn. He is like Archer or Akhtar and these bowlers were also managed the same way as he was. How ,any overs did Archer bowl on the trot This is like expecting Pant to make 250 like Gill. Different roles Having said that, we should definitely use him more smartly. Like maybe having him bowl immediately when Root came or giving him a 6th over at that time Nileshkohli, Manucrick and Tillu 1 1 1

Last 1 year statistic. Both stokes played 11 tests. Look at the disparity in number of overs both bowled. Plus he plays T20, ODIs, IPL. Also look at the performance. ONe guy is averaging 16. Other one averages 34. WHy didn' Stokes bowl like AKash deep in the 2nd test? They celebrate him whatever he does. We go after Bumrah whatever he does Manucrick and Tillu 2
