vvvslaxman Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 Washington Sundar responds to Shubman Gill’s shocking snub with Pope & Brook’s wickets\ Despite all the bowlers struggling, Gill didn't give Washington Sundar the ball until the 69th over, forgetting he'd taken 4 wickets at Lord's in the second innings. If one has been watching the India vs England 4th Test, one’d almost feel like Shubman Gill has a vendetta against Washington Sundar. That, or perhaps he had left his brain in the dressing room when he came out to captain India on the third day in Manchester. Gill’s baffling decisions On the second day, India had already bowled 46 overs, and England had scored 225 runs for the loss of two wickets. The run rate was over 5 for the most part; it was the dismissals of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett that slowed things down a bit. It was Ravindra Jadeja who got Crawley’s wicket in the 32nd over. That was the first scalp. Yet, Washington wasn’t given the ball. There was a hint of turn, and English batters had struggled against Sundar. He had gotten the wickets Ben Stokes, Jamie Smith, and Joe Root‘s wicket in the second innings at Lord’s. Washington wasn’t given an over. One could understand that the pitch was aiding the fast bowler. But even Jadeja bowled 8 of the 46 overs. But that wasn’t all. Washington didn’t bowl a single ball until the 69th over. The decision to play 3 all-rounders was to ensure neither the batting nor the bowling suffers. Washington Sundar responds to snub with wickets But Shardul Thakur bowled only 6 overs, the last of which was the 47th over. When Washington was brought in, it wasn’t for wickets but to keep things tight for the new ball, which was available in 11 overs. On his 25th ball, Washington got a wicket. His beautiful drift was at it again, and he got Pope, who was batting on 71. The last wicket had fallen 38 overs ago. But Washington wasn’t done. On his 37th ball, he got Brook stumped. Again with his drift. Everyone was shocked, not because Washington had gotten another wicket, but as to why Gill hadn’t brought him on. No one actually knows. What’s certain is that Gill doesn’t exactly know what he’s doing. He’s playing 6 bowlers, two of whom had bowled just 6 overs out of 69. This doesn’t make any sense. If he didn’t wish to use either Washington or Shardul’s bowling, why are they playing? Isn’t it better to play one proper batter and one proper bowler? Why was Washington, you best spinner of the series, brought on when England were 305/2? Maybe Gill will answer these questions once the match is over. It won’t matter, though, because it’ll probably be too late.
vvvslaxman Posted July 25, 2025 Author Posted July 25, 2025 Gill is getting ripped to shreds for this deliberate act. If he has no real explanation it is a deliberate snub. WIll BCCI take action. I remember there was a match in zimbabwe Gill took rest in one match. Abhishek made 41 ball 100. Next match he walked straight into the side and pushed ABhishek one down. On top of that accumulated runs. Is he trying to keep every youngster in check so that no one competes with him. Jaiswal is the only competition for him at this point alongwith Pant. Are we reading too much into it? tweaker 1

jf1gp_1 Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 This whole 6 bowler in test isnt working. I guess focus on saving this test and then go 7+4 next game.
pkmmamks Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 This I am guessing was influenced by Jadeja. Apni jagah secure kar raha hai
jf1gp_1 Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 We are playing in England hence ball will move is over playing on our minds. If India had rolled out these kind of tracks, this very English team would have called the designer pitches etc
Gollum Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 And then our fans will blame Sundar. How is it a player's fault when he isn't even given opportunities? Last test also he gave us a winning position when Root/Stokes were threatening to take the target beyond 300. In fact Washi bowled better over there than what Lyon has managed at any stage in his last 2 away Ashes. Lord 1
Trichromatic Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 And why is Washi batting below Thakur when Washi is far better batsman? Kothili, Lord, Number and 1 other 4

Lord Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 This TM targets certain players. Pant is one, always getting blamed by GG and Gill. Then Kuldeep not playing, now Sundar not being used. Ofcourse treatment to Shreyas, Sarfraz is on another level Gollum, Kothili and adi B 3

Point is not about that. It was not as if 5 bowlers were bowling well. They were all getting clatterd around 69 overs.

Deliberately under-utilizing a player who probably they didn't want in the playing XI and ended up playing. Rohit did a lot too. Long back Ganguly did once when he was going through a rut. INdia was in commanding position. INstead of sending someone else he went in made some 15 in 38 balls completely derailed the 300 plus chase. INdia lost despite Sachin's 141 thanks to that pathetic innings. That was not much talked about. But later in India when India was going for a 350 total once again Ganguly instead of promoting Dravid/Yuvraj/Kaif he went in and completely killed the chance of India posting 350. There again sachin's 123 went in vain. Ganguly made 15 in 33. SOmetimes captains abuse the power to make things easy for themselves or tough for certain people. Gill seems like doing both. Jamadagni Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 Yes. Many Tamil players were treated poorly in the past. Gill is a racist and so were all Indian captains in the past. Tamils have produced the best players in the last two decades in first class cricket. The likes of Baba Aparijit, Indra Aparijit would have been ATGs for other countries but they never got a chance in test cricket. Washington Sundar would have already taken 300+ wickets by now. He has natural talent in picking up wickets (even though he takes only 2 wickets per test in FC, he raises his game for India). Kothili 1

Ashwin was a first choice for MSD over Harbhajan. There are 27-28 states in country while only 11 make into the XI. Playing 100+ tests is a privilege which only few can get, even a rarity if you're a bowler. Ashwin is in that league. Baba Aparijith has been a mediocre performer, he won't be any better than karun Nair. I agree on Indrajith, but even like of Ankit Bawne, Paras Dogra has faced the negligence. rtmohanlal 1

Ashwin didn't even get a farewell. He is the BEST of all time in test cricket for India. Murali Vijay should have played more than 100 matches. He is the most all rounded opener since Gavaskar. Sai Sudarshan is the most talented youngster in India currently; should have debuted way back. Dinesh Karthik had ABD level talent, but you know he didn't play many matches due to politics. Sai Kishore is better than Jadeja. I could go on and on. There is a clear bias against Tamil players. Tamils are dark but taller and more handsome than other Indians. I think that's why North Indians are jealous of them. New guy 1

I don't think that's the right reason. Except for Kumble and Sachin I don't remember anyone who got an opportunity to retire with farewell. Had Ashwin retired during NZ series, he would have gotten one. Murli Vijay declined sharply from 2016 onwards, 2017 as well most of his performances came against Ban and SL. He flopped badly vs Aus. His decline collided with rise of Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan. Jadeja has multiple competitors, Saurabh Kumar..Sai Kishore, in present times...Manav Suthar, Nishant Sindhu. They'll are unlucky and waiting for Jadeja to retire due to "experience" quota. Just like Sai has to wait for Ro-Ko to retire. Whoever performs and fits the "role" perfectly will replace Jadeja...Nishant is the best batsman amongst the name, Kishore perhaps the best bowler. If Washy will continue as the main spinner then they won't play a non-batting spinner in the XI. Kuldeep knows that best. No comments on DK vs MSD. DK was chosen first over MSD, he fluffed the chances, left an opportunity for MSD and then we know the history. No one but himself to blame.
