Why does India have such a poor ODI record in Australia against the hosts?

Australia also have had ridiculously good ODI fast bowlers over the years, especially in their own conditions.

Pidge, Dizzy, Flemmo, Binga, Johnson, Starc, Hazlewood.

We brought toothpicks like Barinder Sran to a gunfight.

Yeah, we brought the wrong type of quicks to Aus.

But even SL has done better there with trundlers and finger spinners, part timers. They were a real menace for Aussies in 2000s and early 2010s, always fought close matches.

Looking at the table everyone is poor.  May be India play full strength teams a lot more. WHatever it is. Difference is marginal.

On the contrary, India has racked up all its wins in last 10 years against weakened Aussie teams. Not one win when Aus played even close to its best XI, not even one !!!!!

Anyway before advent of T20s, most teams would play close to their best teams in ODIs.

Maybe CA put tremendous pressure to include these two washed ups,

Would have been better to give opportunities to guys like Parag,Jaiswal,Tilak and even Abhi some games

Aus are giving even the T20 guys odi caps

I don't think even kela will be in any shape for next CWC

Given how bad he's under slightest of pressure,he too should be phases out and use these 22 Odis as much as possible to ready the real potential players for SA 27

Fast bowling is looking terrible, don't have any hopes as too little time to make amends there

Ind outplayed a strong Aus in CWC 19,even 23 minus Head(still strong)

India also keep getting exposed because our batting was all about Top 3.

2015/16 - Sharma, Dhawan, Kohli and then nothing after that. Also, Ashwin and Jadeja were terrible , averaging 64 and 85 with the ball.

There was no need to play 2 spinners in SENA conditions

I don't ever remember an SL lineup which did not bat deep .

Talking about Aus in Aus.

Ind batting does not have means to get a par score forget about above par score and then Bowling is not that good to defend sub-par scores. Think this is alot to do with Ind batters knowing that they can not clear the Aus big boundaries. And gentle drives will not take the ball to boundary. Where-else Aus batter have ability to hit 4/6.

So Ind batters if not getting out and occupying the crease they are either playing dots and when there is a ball to drive their drives are nt going for 4s and because of big boundaries they are nt. going to take a chance to hit 6s and hitting short ball has always been a known issue

Inds tried and tested formula (even in sc conditions) for white-ball has been to play on bit sticky pitch where the opposition batters can not take away the game and spinners can put sort of brake on the batting side. And Ind batting line-up is adaptive to this with Kolhi /Dhawal/ Rohit.

Since Jan 1, 1999

Far behind RSA, SL.

Similar to Eng, Pak, NZ despite us being a much better ODI team in this period (our overall numbers are similar to RSA and much better than these other teams)

since 1999.jpg

On the contrary our T20I stats are pretty good in Australia.

We haven't lost a T20I series in Australia.

Even in 2012 we managed 1-1 and got annihilated in Tri series and Test matches.

Pakistan hasn't won a T20 series in Australia like in England.

SL has won a T20I series in Australia against C side at least.  Gunarante ATG T20 miracle in Geelong lol... That game was awesome

Yeah but in general ODI bilaterals have been taken more seriously than T20I ones.

Aus has been the thorn since ages

This is why I am not optimistic about the 27 WC. You can't win a WC without going through Aussies, and in RSA conditions they will have the right balance.

Maybe our time will come in the 2030s.

2023 WC was such a huge huge miss.

Btw @Lone Wolf, I think Aussies will beat us in the T20 WC final, next year, same venue. All our bilateral successes will be reduced to nought after that. We have handicapped ourselves with senseless selections.

It will be a tossiya tournament at that time of the year most likely.

Australia Eng NZ are all capable sides.

Fluke format any top 4 side can beat eo..

Games in SL will be spin dominated.

Interestingly Sachin has a poor ODI record in Aus.

Even Kohli has statpadded against C, D bowling attacks in a much easier batting era. Whenever Australia's first choice bowlers have played, Kohli has struggled massively over there.

Yeah, great knocks. Meant his overall career, for his high standards. I can't remember anything apart from those 2 knocks.

Just checked, 25 matches, 740 runs, avg 30.8, SR 70.7

But even then, will rate him above Kohli over there, just for those CB finals knocks. Kohli has a sub 20 average IIRC when Aus played even 3 of their top 4 bowlers.

Not about taking potshots against any player. Just emphasizing the point that even our ODI GOATs have struggled there.

Good save :nice:

Even in our best era in ODIs (post 2015) we are 4-11 in ODIs in Australia against them. Often we have come up against weakened Aussies teams, but still one-sided in their favor.

Our only bilateral series win (2-1) there came in 2019 when they were missing Warner, Smith, Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins....a meme side basically with test specialists and Lyon as their spinner.

We have an extremely poor record against full strength Aus both home and away, in our best era. Anyway let us focus on our record in Aus in this thread.

Home I think it is more solid.

2017 series. 2020 series.

I think it comes down to bowling.

Australia's white ball pace bowling is way better than their red (which gets all the limelight).

They have players like Lee, Bracken, Johnson, Starc etc who are way way better white ball bowlers than red.

Here is record of Ind batter (top11 run getters) vs Aus in Aus , Apart from Rohit no one doing better than their normal avg. and sr but are significantly lower than their normal sr and avg.

If the bowling is not good which is a given and battting is doing poorly how can team win
