Yes especially when a player gets hospitalized. Doctors wouldn't allow that player to leave without full clearance.

That's BS, even in life threatening situation no hospital has the authority to hold you against your wishes. They would just sign a consent form and leave you be.

Not quite. Obviously hospitals can't force anyone but they can give you clear advice which in this case was that they recommended him to be in hospital under observation for a day. He was not in hospital for his amusement.  It is a bit much to expect a player to disregard medical advice. 

Even Rishabh Pant who came out to bat with a fractured foot in England did so only after doctors cleared him to do it.

Having dealt with a dozen plus hospitals and probably two dozen doctors over the last 8-12 months, for ailments much worse than this, I can tell you 90% of the time what they spout is the same generic crap what they'd say in OPD and I don't need to tell you how private hospital, and doctors, make bank these days! * half of them don't even look beyond the first two/four lines of the test results.

 

Obviously Gill will know better but from whatever BCCI put out he should have been batting at least towards the end of the day.

This is very true but you can't expect a player to disregard whatever he's been advised.

  If I had been advised to go into hospital and remain under observation, I wouldn't disregard it and schedule work meetings or a business trip assuming the doctors are being alarmist and I know better. I would check with the doctors first if they thought this was a manageable risk. I would assume Gill did something similar..he is a professional sportsman and Indian captain after all and he wouldn't make a decision to not turn up without clear guidance and involvement of experts.

Put Stokes, Cummins, Bavuma, Williamson in Gill's place. Would they have hidden themselves in some hospital room or come out to lead by example?

Dinshaw Pardiwala was also in charge of our Olympic athletes in past couple of games. Bajrang tore his knee ligament in an earlier round in Tokyo, still competed and won a bronze, then a long rehab/rest. Here this guy can't pad up and stand in one end for 5 minutes? Worried that his average would be affected?

Not sure about the seriousness of the Injury. In such condition its mostly up to players' what they want to do. 

 

Play or not play. TM can say only few things. As for hospitals, other posters have mentioned in his condition hospital will have no issue if he goes back home and return for the next check-up. They will just give some medicine to relax the muscles and would ask for rest and ice pack on the neck.

 

Has players come and play with even more serious injuries yes -- We saw Woakes coming out to play with broken arm.

All upto the player , the staff can only say few things-- Like its up to you, check if you can and you want to etc....

Morkel said it wasn't because of workload but most probably due to bad sleep posture the previous night.

The concussion should have happened during the match, its an off-field injury with Gill

Trust me guys no hospital can hold you, u sign a paperwork saying leaving against medical/doctors advice. Did this 8 times n i regretted it every time. Even when i was in icu
