This is almost Aus B side.  But the fact is Aus hardly won any WT20 even with their full strength team (except WT20 2021, which was a "Win the Toss, Win the Match tournament)

I had a Brasilian colleague/friend in 90's and I mentioned to him that although limited in athleticism and skill, I liked the Mexican team for their commitment. He said with disgust - "They have a sh!t team."  After the 7-1 in Belo, I wanted to ask him politely if the "sh!t team" would have conceded 4 in 6 minutes AND would the whole country have cried as much. The crying was more disgusting than even the result or play. Unfortunately I had lost contact with him.

 

Brasil were as obnoxious about soccer before 7-1 as the West Indians were before say 2005. Both have learnt a lesson.

Everybody has praised Chepauk this time. Their renovation, crowds, management. Even the pitches there have been good, proper, high scoring ones, perfect for this format.

Ireland 235/5 against Oman in SSC. But who even cares? Saturday-Sunday kam se kam dhang ka match rakhte. Why SL-Aus on Monday? Better had that been played today or tomorrow afternoon.

I was watching this classic on YT.  Thoughts: 

 

1. We had no business winning that game.

 

2. Such a traumatic loss,  no wonder Pakistan fans still struggle to point out on the doll where bad India touched them.

 

3. Ashwin, that deep thinker. 

 

4. Kohli, Imperator.

Immediately after that in the 3rd-4th place match, Dutch smoked them 3-0. Brazil football's aura is finished now. 

 

Even India has never been humiliated in that manner in a home WC.

After that match, Kohli became the undisputed GOAT of white ball cricket for me. And easily the greatest T20 batsman of all time, there is nobody remotely close, it is like Bradman in tests. 

 

And how clutch was Ashwin. Imagine the pressure after that joker DK's brainfade, in front of a packed MCG, a small mistake there and he would have become Indian cricket's biggest villain. He let it go for a wide (even riskier against SLA Nawaz) and then 4 to win it, unreal clutchness that was, many players would have fumbled there...any normal person would want to make room against SLA targetting the stumps. That leave was perhaps the ballsiest, high IQ play I have seen in cricket...just before that Kohli had advised him to move legside and and lift over covers but Ashwin wasn't a sheep. A month later, Ashwin again proved his clutchness in the Mirpur test, 42* to win it for us from 70/7 on that rank turner, contrast that to how we fumbled the Kolkata test against RSA chasing 124. 

 

Such players are very difficult to replace.

We had two incredible players in him and Ashwin, just extraordinary in their own ways.

I have often thought that in terms of its intrinsic worth maybe that leave deserves to be immortalised as much as Dhoni’s six to win the WC in 2011.  
 

In my head at least it lives as testament to Ashwin’s cricketing genius, a memory where he stands alone.

Instead of those U23 emerging teams can we have multi nation T20 tournaments with teams like, Zim, Netherlands USA, Nepal etc. We can choose some offbeat venues who are starved of international cricket and blood in our promising youngsters(Sooryavanshi etc). If the cricket is good, viewers will come

leave aside the standard of cricket and even the format, this already feels like one of the better cricket world cups we've had. lots of minnows doing well from all over the world, and 3 games per day feels perfect.
