What exactly keeps Sanju Samson in contention?

In theory, his selection makes good sense. You play your keeper as opener to extend your batting lineup. But Kishan has proved to be bettar at that, so Sanju may be on his way out.

He was actually really good in 2024 post the WC.

Gill replaced him in 2025 and he moved down and was replaced by Jitesh for a few games where he didn't do well.

Gill was also failing so they moved Samson up who did well in last match of SA series.

Failed here and Ishan did well so Ishan gets the spot.

His main utility is letting Rinku play in the lower order and Rinku is a monster as well.

I think they decided to back him. Briefly he repaid their faith by scoring 3 centuries in 4 innings.  So they decided to continue with him. He was more a boom or bust at that time. 3 centuries 4 ducks or something. Then a lean series against England.  Then Gill came and it made his struggles even worse.   Continuing to back him since he is a keeper was not a terrible idea as he had no competition. Having keeper as opener gives you so many avenues to play with your lower order. They even tried Jitesh. Buti his horrendous game in emergging player tournament kinda blew his chances. They probably did  not expect consistency from him. But actually he is consistent in the opposite way. Failing consistently. So they wer already in a position to review his performance. Kishan accelerated it.  I think TM apart from the period where they put him in different spots they have been fair to him. It is nobody's fault but Sanju's. He doesn't have insane reflexes like Abhishek or other modern guys. Watch Urvil patel and his bat speed. There are many players who can take his spot.

Not may. There is a reason Ishan got the WK gloves today.

Also his technique has gone completely to ****.

He can get a WC medal like 24 by being part of the squad though lol.

That is the source of all his problems. He somehow felt he needs more time to receive the ball. His way of solving that problem was setting himself very close to stumps. Bit like how Kohli tried to solve his slip catch problem by standing 1 or 2 feet outside. Also his bat pick up is restrictive. He gets cramped most of the time. No sound base. That free flow is not there. I think he is lucky that he is part of the side. Only reason he is playing because he can keep. Otherwise there are enough people to take his spot.

Mallus in WC squads are a good luck charm.

Remember, Sanju was in the 24 T20 WC squad.

Sreesanth in 2007 WT20 and 2011 WC

Sunil Valson in 1983 squad. His case is unique, because he never represented India but was in that squad.

They might as well select Sheshi Tharoor as the token Malayali. Yevergreen player.

Sanju has some limitations. High time he admits and works on it. One thing is sure if you are worried about short balls all the time you are likely to get into trouble against other type of balls. Something that Iyer had to deal with all the time. But Iyer worked hard on it. Infact over-indulged by trying to pull everything.  Even he has this tendency to retreating back  to give himself more time. Although it kinda impacted his frontfoot game not to the extent it impacted Samson.

I Kishan missed 3 stumping chances today and his overall keeping was horrible.  This probably allows sanju to be in the team till the match against USA.  If he fails against USA, then I am sure he would be dropped.

Naah they will open with Kishan.

Unless Kishan flops big time with the WK.

Thing is with Kishan and Tilak coming back this team becomes so superpowered that some stumping misses etc won't hurt.

Kishan will take practice. But my worry is his mindset may get impacted if he has abad day behind the wicket. Right now he is fielding well. Plays a specific role. Keeping role can actually discrupt his form. Wish we had some other keeper in form.

Sanju is one of few cricketers i have always rooted for when it comes to making into playing XI. However he has looked so out of sorts that today if selectors announce that Pant (my favorite current player, also biased since he is from my state) is replacing Sanju in the squad i would be happy.

His problem is, he transfers his entire weight on backfoot and stretches it too far back, doesn't come on frontfoot in time or the frontfoot press isn't there ,the way it should be ,most of the times he ends up playing with hands

If Kishan gets injured, maybe SSs' the backup keeper or may be it was Kishan the original back up keeper, before he went berserk & bypassed Sanju in the pecking order
