Who cares about the history as most stadiums will not have history associated with those in Australia and England. Even Wankhede is a relatively new stadium preferred over the old Branbourne. Countries like India will usually build new venues to create their “history”. Lol so the dead crowd at Ahmedabad which is forced to get marquee matches will create history.. good luck with that. If somehow India get this final and lose, it will get a tag of a stadium in which India loses finals only. Go have that history then- wont be long till BCCI treats it like any other stadium and stop favouring it New guy 1

"In a decade it is likely that people will automatically picture Ahmedabad as a venue hosting important marquee games. " - In a decade whoever is the PM (especially if from opposition party) will probably shut down the stadium stating it is sub-par for any international matches, what then?... I don’t see it as an issue at all. BJP will likely remain in power for at least 2 decades so that likely seals Ahmedabad’s status as the marquee venue. Other stadiums are not up to mark. India has only two good stadiums at the moment - Ahmedabad and Dharamsala (for the scenic location). Chennai sucks where even IPl games are unwatchable. Mumbai is like a toy stadium. Eden Garden has been turned into a toy too to increase its capacity. Delhi stadium is seen as an eye sore with air quality to add to the woes.

The band that plays at Colombo for example is annoying.

Personally, going to cricket stadium is not like going to a circus. Cricket is not a Bhangra party.

Literally all foreign mediapersons, visiting fans and teams, our own press people have called Chepauk the best venue this WC. Following a renovation work which happened last year, new outfield, upgrade in stands, training nets, media centre, hospitality boxes etc. Even the pitch has been high scoring this time. Games in Wankhede, Eden are much more watchable than the soulless Namo stadium, both are always buzzing, look good on TV, nearby areas are also aesthetic. Ahmedabad is just an ugly concrete bowl, flattish stands (not steep) because of which spectators are much farther away than needed to be. Tiered style stands also trap sound better than saucers, which adds to the buzz. No wonder Namo stadium has such a dead feel to it. Edited February 24 by Gollum New guy and speedster 2
Gollum Posted February 24 Posted February 24 (edited) Tottengam Hotspur stadium keeps winning awards for best stadium in England, because of its design. Is it closer to Wankhede/Chepauk or this abomination where most fans are exposed to the harsh sun/open air. During one of the IPL finals (CSK vs GT IIRC) where there was a lot of rain, fans in lower stands couldn't find cover and the ones who had shade also got wet because of the roof leaking. Sure, world class. Not one redeemable feature in this venue. Eden has great history/legacy, located in one of the most beautiful, green localities in the city. For any visiting cricketer, playing in Eden is an honour. Edited February 24 by Gollum
bsriharsha Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Chepauk has charm , i wouldn't say it's like anfield level atmosphere but it's got good crowd. Modi stadium is about promoting Gujarat. That's all modi has done since he's come to power. Promote Gujarat , build Gujarat. Cities like Bangalore , Hyderabad not getting matches where the likes of these get the marquee ones is ****. Despite the problems of traffic etc that the cities face , they are still more important to India rather than keeping the redneck happy New guy 1

But overall , it's Anfield which despite being an old stadium (freshly renovated) still maintains its charm.

Punjab, Haryana win all our medals, but when it comes to union budget allocation for sports, they get 2% of that of Guj. In hockey national championships, Guj loses by 30-40 goals margins to other side, sent 1 athlete to Paris games, there is no sports culture but zabardasti getting all perks. Even in Gujarat, cricket centres are Rajkot, Vadodara, Jamnagar. Not Ahmedabad, this is simply a vanity project. PM of India should rise above regionalism. Edited February 24 by Gollum Sandz 1

There were some high scoring games iirc but the renovation did not appear to make Cheupak considerably better. Maybe it is some PR stunt that it is better. Only stadium that fits marquee status in India is the Ahmedabad one. The soul, noise level, etc., are subjective. I personally would not prefer circus like behaviours at stadiums. Ahmedabad does tons of pre games activities which are fun to watch but when the game starts the crowd probably give cricket the respect it deserves. Maybe Ahmedabad is the flag bearer for relatively sophisticated match viewing experience in India, making it even more suitable for international marquee events. While many of the other parts in India are stuck in the circus like behaviour at cricket stadiums. Edited February 24 by zen

People go to stadiums to have a jolly time, DJ plays music and sometimes makes crowd do Mexican Wave or chant slogans. Same thing happens all over the world, in hockey, football, to a lesser extent in badminton and tennis (except during play). This isn't chess or billiards where crowd behaves like it is in a library. I recall crowds heckling Shami in 23 BGT 4th test by shouting Jai Shri Ram whenever he came near the boundary, imagine doing that to your own player. Religious slogans aimed at players in a sporting field is so unnecessary. Edited February 24 by Gollum Norman 1

Religious slogans aimed at players in a sporting field is so unnecessary. Yes, we are all giving personal opinions. No one has gone to all the stadiums. How many who write against Ahmedabad have gone to Ahmedabad? Most of us judge (whether it is a stadium in India or overseas) based on watching it on TV. Obviously, there are going to be selected negative instances at almost most venues. Kolkata itself is remembered for the 1996 SF loss, Wankhede is known for booing players including Tendulkar, and so on. I don’t prefer circus like behaviour in general, which is where I find Ahmedabad “relatively” more sophisticated. The stadium itself is in a league of its own (size and scope) in India. Ahmedabad would remain the marquee stadium of India (designed to perform that role) until something more phenomenal is developed, chances of that are less in the medium term with land constraints. The issue here is not necessarily with the stadium but it being targeted for political reasons - panauti, crowd, pitch, etc., are just finding different reasons to criticize it. And if the targeting is for political reasons - what chance do Chepauk, Eden Gardens, etc. have? Top leaders from TN, WB, etc., may not even be invited for a tea anywhere else relatively to those with pan India political clout. Edited February 24 by zen
NameGoesHere Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Jokes aside I don’t subscribe to the panauti school, and my political philosophy is right wing with a storing liberal core. But I wait for a day when this stadium either stands on its own merit or is dumped to stagnate as the backyard it presently deserves to be. The great stadiums have sporting traditions, or visual charm, or an unmatched atmosphere - none of these are built in a day. Ahmedabad is nothing more than a naked and brutal display of the power and money of two people alone. An it has charm, no grace, It has little sporting credential, and less viewing appeal. vvvslaxman 1

People still play at Wankhede as the elites find it convenient.
G_B_ Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I 100% think we need to rotate key matches away from A'bad. Its a highly toss-dependent venue. This is similar to Wankhede which relies heavily on the toss. I understand the need for accommodating 132k people. But winnability is a key criterion. Re Modi's name, the man has been a cricket administrator and spearheaded the construction of the stadium. Its no different than DY Patil or Wankhede, both of whom were named after admins/patrons who were alive when the name was given. Or even the Chinnaswamy stadium (name conferred to founder of Karnataka cricket association). Those complaining on the name forget Indian cricketing history. Narendra Modi stadium is named after a cricketing admin of Gujarat state. Simple. New guy 1

There is a reason why legacy centres like Eden, Wankhede, Chepauk, Chinnaswamy hosted big matches because the crowd intimidates the opposition. This is not to say the crowd wins matches. End of the day it's the team that matters more than anything. But the crowd is crucial and must help the team.
