And BGT 2020-21 win and this tourney shows it was the other way round. It was the stat-padding and failing when it mattered was what kept Bumrah away from trophies for a decade. GoldenSun 1

Vancouver Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Why does Gautam Gambhir seem to assume that an ordinary cricket fan isn’t capable of thinking for themselves? Of course, it’s easy for Gautam Gambhir to say that milestones don’t matter when he himself has a milestone bowler like Jasprit Bumrah in the team. Milestones play an important role in sports, they help measure greatness, consistency and often inspire the next generation of players. The greatest teams in history were also filled with individuals achieving remarkable milestones. The Australian side of the 2000s and the West Indies team of the 1980s were packed with stars who reached extraordinary records while also winning trophies. Individual brilliance and team success have often gone hand in hand. Imran had Wasim, Waqar, Saqlain, Mushtaq, Anwar, Sohail and Inzi. Sachin is the W.G. Grace of Indian cricket, his milestones and immense popularity helped fill the coffers of the BCCI and elevate the game’s stature in India. Same with Kohli when it comes to consistency and fitness culture. Imagine if Sachin chose to give away his wicket more often, never going for centuries, and hoped that bowlers like Mohanty or Kuruvilla would pick up the slack.

However, its incredibly petty to use these moments to air personal agendas Although I agree with him, he somehow manages to dampen a celebratory moment with the comparison comment. He could've just praised Samson for being selfless and not caring about milestones, and just left it at that. Edited March 9 by BacktoCricaddict FischerTal and GoldenSun 2

Besides i don't remember Gambhir giving a funny presser lol This is the norm.

BacktoCricaddict Posted March 9 Posted March 9 (edited) 1 hour ago, Vancouver said: Milestones play an important role in sports, they help measure greatness, consistency and often inspire the next generation of players. It is a nuanced conversation. And context matters. Different milestones matter differently under different circumstances. In T20 cricket, a 100 (95) is a meaningless milestone most of the time. Or slowing down when you are in your 90s and eventually reaching a 100 while lowering your team's score is meaningless. Wouldn't you rather have a 89 (43)? Even in tests, big scores are important, but not the specific, arbitrary milestone number (50, 100, 150) or the number of such numbers (100 100s). VVSL's 281 is much preferable to any 300, as is Dravid's 190 compared to a 200. Like @vvvslaxman points out above, chasing a specific number at a specific venue for some arbitrary reason other than winning/saving a match is not conducive to team success. If one prioritizes the milestone itself, they can lost sight of the team goal. Edited March 9 by BacktoCricaddict GoldenSun and Gollum 2

For me wining tournies mean everything! Samson's three scores in 80s & 90s are greater than 100s the same way I rate Gambhir's 97 in 2011 WC final or Tendulkar's 98 against Pak in 2003 WC (his greatest ODI innings IMO). That's why I rate Bumrah higher than 5-fers or 10-fers due to Bumrah's impact. At the end of the day it's all about winning tournaments and if you can't get your team over the line, what's the point? I hope we've gone away from useless 100s and stat-padding and the team uses Samson, Abhishek, Ishan, Tilak, Pandya's innings this WC as the template. No 100 by any of them but they won matches for the team! That's what I care about. Pant's 89 at SCG Pantt's 97 at the Gabba Sehwag's 83 at chepauk Ultimate_Game, Gollum and BacktoCricaddict 1 2

Lord Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Unless team goals are being compromised, there's nothing wrong in wanting a 100 or a 50. Its easy to preach such things. Kohli also said the same things many times
