Is the obsession to hit sixes hurting India?

Was watching some stats and commentary from the two innings

First 40 balls

India - 5 fours, 1 six, 3 wickets. 48/3

England - 8 fours, 2 sixes, 1 wicket. 66/1

Indian batters were looking to hit almost every ball for a six, lost 3 wickets. Many of India's twos also came from mishits trying to hit sixes, which could have very well resulted in dismissals.

England batters hit couple of sixes, but hit more boundaries and twos. Then started attacking spinners and accelerated through the middle overs.

I understand it is a low target, but there was a method to their chase.

Has the obsession of hitting sixes in IPL and otherwise ruined any method to India's batting?

Yeah most posters on this forum believe that just because we were hitting 90m sixes on Indian grounds, we would be able to do the same in these conditions on bigger grounds.

This team doesn't know how to adapt and play according to the changing conditions. This uni dimensional approach wouldn't work outside India.

Trend bridge is smaller ground.  On one side it is mere 57 meter boundary.  SKY hit 57 meter sixes last time.  Ground has nothing to do with it.

Just admit England is too good.  They are at near full strength unlike India.

Besides Harry Brook is a freak... Played 3 outrageous shots last night.

.

Of course. There is no denying that.

My point is there was some method to their batting. They played more ground shots in the first 6 overs. Hit more boundaries than India, and then started attacking.

Whereas our batters are obsessed with six hitting. It is six or dot.

I saw Harry Brook playing a scoop for six and Nasser and DK saying this is another facet in which Indians lack.

We don't innovate enough.

England and Brook have planned for this they keep bowling Short keeping deep square on both sides and we fall every single time.

Both third man and Fine leg are inside they know Indians won't hit over them.

There are some structural flaws with our batting.

England has provided pitches with pace and bounce this time.

Yea.. but boundary size doesn't hurt us more than that. But the 4th match was on a road. Even paced. Bounce is normal. These shoulder bouncer lengths can get you even in India if you unwisely try to whack it above your head.  Six hitting obsession has hurt us more.  They also mishit. Either they placed or  played onto ground.

TM seems to think like fans. For instance, as a fan, I have got carried away with ultra-aggressive approaches in T20s, where every batter should be a natural 6-hitter. No place for ground-hitters and anchors. And if we collapse now and then, so-be-it.

But, obviously, I am just a fan who wants to be entertained. But TM should be smarter than that, no? Assess conditions and bat strategically?  Esp after being burned 3-4 times in a row.

On belters that approach is the way to go. It worked for us 85% of the time. Moment you sense new ball does a lot more,, just wait for your moment. First 6 overs are tougher in these conditions. The problem is also against spin. It is not just bounce. How come a part timer like will jacks outbowl our bowling

India vs England - SPIN

England 4 matches 8 wickets 32.62 average 8.51 ER

India 4 matches 3 wickets 81.33 average 11.09 ER

India vs Ireland - SPIN

Ireland 2 matches 6 wickets 21.83 average 8.27 ER

India    2 matches  2 wickets 40 average 8.88 ER

We struggled against even Ireland part timers that too in death overs.

So why do you think  Indian bowlers were so ineffective against England batting then.

They were bullied by Brook.

T20 WC was largely in India

IPL was of course in India

People got used to the patta Indian pitches for T20s for 6 months and now are surprised that other countries do not have pitches like India.....

Well welcome to reality.

The hook and pull are not easy shots to master. They are both back foot shots and unless you play them from a young age, it is hard to learn them later on.

It has something to do with the brain and spotting the short ball early and being ready to play hook/pull.

For example for as good a player as Sehwag was while attacking, he looked distinctly uncomfortable pulling ( pull not flick ) and I never saw him play the backfoot traditional legside hook. Totally different player from say a Roy Fredericks who would hook a short ball even if it was the first ball of the inning.

Nothing wrong in aiming to hit 6s in t20s, that is the game.

Issue is technical not the 6-hitting, Kishan, Tilak, Sanju are in many ways ,imited sanju always had issues when ball is doing something. Kishan and Tilak do not have off-side game.

Issue is you can not line-up leg-side each ball when its moving or assisting the bowlers be it extra bounce or pace. Extra bounce means you are trying to hit hook/pull every ball which is a risky shot. With lack of off-side game and having to play on pitches where bowler were getting assistance their limitations got exposed .

Verma and Kishan have sr of below 120 in this series,  can not really define if iyer's innings were good or bad but more inclined towards bad innings but he had 2 batters around him scoring below 120 sr what could have he done ???

Here is the sr of Ind batters vs Eng batters Apart from sharma/vaibhav/iyer every ind batters sr is below 130 , can not win games vs top sides with such sr.

Its clear Ind batters' hitting ability was tested in non sc conditions and they were not that good. The core of which is limitation and tech. issues

But my problem is they are trying to hit only sixes.  Fours, timing the ball, seeing the new ball off, seeing the most dangerous bowler (like Archer) off are all part of the method, which this team seems to have completely disregarded.

Archer is the only threatening bowler in their side. So i am not buying that they suddenly find the debutant Tongue and Malnourished curran some unplayable bowlers.

Both Vaibhav and Abhishek with their bat swings are going to hit more sixes.

Others like Ishan are unable to even score runs at decent pace.So them trying to hit sixes is out of question.
