Dhoni's defensive mindset as a captain.

This movie has been played many times and unless this guys is kicked out, he will repeat the same thing over and over. You can blame bowlers for recent struggles of this team all you want but this defensive mindset of Dhoni is not at all helping this weak bowling attack.Today they were tottering at 12/3 and this guy instead of going for kill tries to get fifth bowler in giving confidence to them. Once any batting side goes on top of this attack which is not hard to begin with there is no stopping ,in world t20 when we needed to get SA under 120 odd this guy was busy finish fifth bowler' overs and delayed getting Ashwin who was India's leading spinner got to bowl in tenth over.Match was over by then. This nonsense by Dhoni is getting ridiculous and he needs to go. . '

At the rate team india is going, i'll be very scared even if we play against ZIM. Even Zim will most likely rape the Sh*t out of this playing 11 we keep introducing!!! Players like Jadeja/Chawla are the reasons why we started to flop badly.

When you play with three bowlers, this is going to happen and then you have Jadeja and Yuvtaj is still.a part timer. 8 overs of part timers cost us the match.

Even a debutant as captain will do well as a skipper, Dhoni has regressed so much as a captain. He has outlived his shelf life as a captain and should be replaced. Doesn't matter if we have a replacement or not.

Every move that he made has come under the scanner, for one, the biggest blunder he made was by dropping his most experienced T20 bowler R Ashwin to continue his blow-job affair with R. Jadeja.

The problem is that most Indian bowlers don't have a game plan. B Kumar had a clear plan yesterday and it worked brilliantly. Yuvi and Jadeja were doing ok, but it all came down to 1-2 bad balls per over that cost them most of the runs. Yuvi did the same thing twice, the long hop that went for 6 (you can't bowl like that to experienced batsmen). The part-timers need to keep things simple and bowl a tight line. This is why bowlers like Afridi and Hafeez are so successful in this format, not because they are extraordinary spinners but because they keep it tight and don't give the batsman space to play shots.

Ashwin's bowling also has gone down but still he is very good in this format. He should work on his fitness. Cut down on sambhar and thayir sadam and eat more chicken and hit the gym more often.

Dhoni is always has this mindset of stretching the match as long as possible even in batting too, so this is who he is and this defensive mindset will not work as a captain.

Dude, Kumble wasn't a great fielder either and btw Srinath was Vegetarian. :winky: Yea he needs to improve his fitness like half the team, but Indian cricketers in general aren't known for their fitness barring a few exceptions. Anyways Dhoni's logic for not including Ashwin is that he is not a good bowler outside of the power plays and since we had 3 seamers already he won't get to bowl in PP.

In Dhoni's defense, I read somewhere on this forum that what could he do with a team like this. Such statements miss the point that with a weak team, the importance of having a good captain is critical. Like many have said, many captains would do a good job leading a team with great players! To me, it is mostly about playing attacking cricket. When I see the opposition 3 down for nothing on the board, I want to go for even more wkts. I know one simple thing: taking wkts puts pressure on the opposition and nothing shots up the RRR for the opposition like wkts. Since I have this mindset, my team selection will reflect such a thought process .... Also as a captain, you should be open to grabbing opportunities that come your way in the field. To grab those opportunities, it is necessary to have the tools you need in the playing 11 When you see the playing 11, you can somehow make sense of the strategy. For Ind it is all about batting and then containing the opposition. The pressure is put on the opposition by India's ability to either put runs on board or the perception of it being able to chase. This policy could have worked if we had some of the great guys playing in their best form The new Indian team has to be a more balanced side. Whoever is leading it should learn to attack with both the bat and the bowl. Once this guiding policy is established, the team selection should reflect that with the selection of proper tools At the moment, India has no strategy except the hope of being able to pull things through by relying on its traditional strengths, whether it is exceptional batting or quality spin (both of which are mere shadows at this point)

Only at the beginning of his career...he became a meat-eater after his shoulder surgery around 96-97...just saying

I think Dhoni's case is like most captains. After a while, they run out of new ideas and opposition teams are used to their style. The great captains have the ability to reinvent and revitalise their team. I think Dhoni is just drained, both physically and mentally and doesn't have it in him to reinvigorate this team. I would like to see a new captain. Even though Kohli is young, inexperienced and immature he might just be the tonic needed to reinvigorate this team. Dhoni can take some time off, time away from cricket, rest and regroup and come back as just a keeper-batsman. In the shorter forms of the game I think he still has a lot to offer as a player. Very good player in run-chases. He just needs a complete break from cricket for about 6 months or so, and come back with less responsibility.

Yesterday too, Dhoni was too defensive.. never looking for wkts.Ashwin bowling on the legstump/ Jaddu repeatedly firing into legs/Selecting the same team again & again. Does Dhoni need a break from captaincy, say resting him from last 3 games or should he be relieved from captaincy in one format atleast?

No yesterday Dhoni did nothing wrong, he juggled his bowlers fine, he gave virat an over to see if he can get two cheap overs it did not work. Like everyone here, Dhoni knew both Ishant and Vinay are capable of leaking runs later which proved right. When you are afraid to use two of five bowlers during death how the hell can you manage any overs. Ashwin also cannot get a free pass how can a strike bowler be so ineffective.

 Ashwin and Jadeja's bowling is now equated to Dhoni being defensive!!!!

Yes.. repeatedly bowling leg stump is defensive
It was ploy to block one side of the wicket and pack another side to stop them from getting runs when ball was not turning for spinners which paid well.
