veer Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I've lived in a Chawl (20*20 feet) in Mumbai, then 1 bd apt in suburbs, then apt in US and then a 5000 sqft house.. i have gone through different phases in life where life has changed, needs have changed, confirt level has changed... What I have learned so far is that I am not missing festival, friends, family.. But I am missing the ERA or the late 80s, early 90s decade... you get out of school and play cricket/hide and seek/laghori/ etc day after day... you are on Summar vacation and you go out and play all day.. Right now those play grounds have become parking lots, kids are stuck with either phones or books most of the time. We are in Tech era.. People are more attached with their phones, tvs than to friends.. Festivals are not the same either.. -10 PM? curfew during Navratri festival which I think became Line maro time.. bf/gf time.. -Noisy Fire Crackers are now banned for Diwali and Diwali time is now outing time.. Families dont go to each others houses anymore during Diwali. Having said all that I would still want to go back to India.. My loyalties are with both US and India.. However, US has too many good people (believe me).. while India needs good people to sustain its progress.. If a lot of smart and good people start exiting India then we won't left with anything. Hardships are there but then I personally feel that there is a duty to repay some debt. I am hoping to move back to India in five years times.

I enjoy all festivals in the privacy of my or my friends' home, but not in a disruptive manner as is done in India.[/quote'] Yes I think two weeks twice a year is probably enough of a dose. I probably wouldn't enjoy the overkill either. the fourth F - family, I hate the nosy jealous aunties and uncles who're really of no use. Maybe it's just my extended family but I would much rather keep my distance and stay connected by quarterly phone calls. I'm happy as long as I've got me immediate family around me. I think I miss friends the most. I've met plenty of people in the U.S. but no "best" friends. I've struggled to find that one "best" friend. Maybe I need to realize that there are no best friends after you're certain age.
rkt.india Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Not any more :(( when was the last time you visited. Apart from Manual Labor everything is expensive or $ equivalent,well at least almost. Again that depends...if you are used to a certain quality of consumption,the equivalent in India is not at all cheaper. Apart from Cheap manual Labor there is nothing that stands out. Having said that the fascination of being in the USA is not what it is anymore,everything that is available in USA is now available in India....no one says bring me this bring me that anymore? Apart from good Strip clubs...You don't get those in India :giggle: Only things that are imported.
Detonator Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 The thing I hate most is we give too much importance to what our neighbours and relatives think.Almost everything has to be dictated by what others around us think of us .Really hate that attitude and almost everyone here thinks like that . As for the thing love most is has to be food particularly home made food .When I am away that's the thing I really struggled with.Idly and Sambar FTW why blood?? ahh same blood :cantstop:
kruiser Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I just came back from india after a 3 week vacation. My kids' reaction was, we loved the people but why is everything so filthy? Why do people throw trash everywhere? That sums up my observations as well. Even Taj Mahal, the one must see toursidt destination in India is so under developed and mis-managed, i wonder why people still go there. My summary - If you want comforts, stay in western world, if you want true luxury, go to India (of course you need to have money).

It is strangely exhilarating and unlike anything that the West has to offer.

The local restaurants,the tea shops,(''chai latte ''of starbucks is so expensive) You can explore various market places...Variety of shops from dresses to bangles..Obviously very very crowded,but much better than the boring malls.
