A professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University has voiced her support for plebiscite in Kashmir and said that India had "illegally occupied" the territory, a media report said today.

“We believe that democracy (Rashtraraj) is a very strong thing, but if it was so strong then why few students, who raised such (anti-India) slogans were arrested," asked JNU professor Nivedita Menon, who teaches at the Centre for Comparative Politics and Political Theory at the International Studies school.

According to Zee News, Menon said that tanks and guns were used to keep “the democracy intact”.

“If such incidents happen then the democracy is not so strong as we claim because tanks and guns are used to keep the democracy intact and strong.”

"After Independence, the accession of Kashmir was done following the India-Pakistan war on the pretext that a plebiscite will be conducted when the situation gets back to normal and since then it (janmat sangrah) has not happened," she said.

“We all know that the world today believes that India is illegally occupying Kashmir,” she asked while addressing a gathering of students on nationalism programme at the varsity.

According to the report, she said that India is an "imperialist country".

"Here 30-40 percent of the country is under control of the army in the name of special forces laws, which are used to crush the people.''

“Atrocities are being committed from Kashmir to the northeast and in Chhattisgarh. Manipur and Kashmir have been illegally occupied by the Indian state."

She said raising pro-azadi slogans in context of Kashmir was justified, said the report.

“When the international community is debating over legal occupation of Kashmir, then we should think that 'azadi' slogan is justified."

How come these type of professors are allowed in Indian university to teach?

By the same logic, Pakistan is illegally occupying a big chunk of Kashmir as well.  No slogans about that?  Isn't India's Kashmir the only state where outsiders aren't allowed to buy property?  From India's point of view, the government needs to think of strategies to integrate J&K into mainstream India and block out Pakistan's meddling in the region

Hard to believe that she is a professor! The following should be noted:

a) Kashmir Plebiscite - Pakistan has altered the demographics of Kashmir to make it difficult to hold a plebiscite as:

  • Kashmiri Pandits have been forced out of the region
  • In Gilgit and Balistan, a part of Kashmir, Pak has settled Pakistanis in the region so much so that there are more Pakistani now in that area
  • Pak has not withdrawn its forces from the region, a precondition to Plebiscite

Kashmir, a manufactured problem

b) Manipur - Would love to learn more on how Manipur is being illegally occupied by India. I hope the presence of India army on Indian territory is not considered as occupation by her. In that sense, whole Pakistan is an occupied territory (under Army's control)

another JNU prof Jayati Ghosh says

We've been hearing from plausible sources that IB agents were there & some of them may have been shouting slogans

so no slogans > ABVP did it > Kashmiri radicals to blame > IB infiltrated JNU ->

Why does JNU profs have FORD foundation connections?

I think Ind should focus more on POK and Tibet. Both the territories are illegally occupied by using force and where people are not even allowed to raise their voice

Communist are using democracy and freedom of speech to propagate their propaganda. Kejriwal was suppose to be a good guy now he just become any other person who hate BJP and MODI. I dont know what is wrong with praising somebody if he is actually doing something good. You can find a perfect democrazy anywhere in the world. It is you have to make whatever you got and utilize it in a better way.

They want to provoke BJP into stupidity and get jailed and thereby become heroes. simple.

Kanhaiya Kumar was peeing all over JNU. He makes one stupid speech and BJP made him a national hero. now everyone wants same treatment.

Exactly...they are provoking Govt/court and get arrested and create more drama.

Better to ignore them and use proper timing to strike back.

Why does one only hear these kinds of noises from JNU? As an institute, they have a pedigree and a history, but for the life of me I can't recollect the last time JNU came into the news for an academic achievement.

A JNU alumni come up with something useful was the J-PAL. But that has been more than a decade ago.

Also the knee jerk reaction by the government doesn't help anyone.
