Now Shami can be considered our spearhead in the test series.Bhuvi & Umesh have done reasonably well,,when they have got oppurtunity. As the next all series are home series ,we will be playing only 2 fast bowlers.Shami is the first choice ,Bhuvi & Yadav are preferred as per the pitches.

Does Ishant Sharma guarantee a place in.the squad when he returns after his injury layoff

Ishant improved as a bowler in test matches starting from the New Zealand series in early 2014.   His seam position became better and he started getting more bounce as a result. His accuracy improved too.

He has not been that good in India but, in away test matches, he has done quite well from early 2014.  Won us 2 test matches in England and Sri Lanka.

He is averaging 30 in away test matches starting  from that NZ series, with 59 wickets from 16 test matches which includes 2 washed out matches.  Has a SR  of 53 .

I think this is what his role should be in the future....serving our team in away test matches.  His height and bounce along with pace, helps our team away from home.

This is how he has fared ---

Ishant has shown improvement in both pace and accuracy in the last 1.5 years. I dont care how he underperformed prior to it. He can generate bounce and can sustain intensity even in his later spells.

If it comes to choosing between him and BK, Ishant would be my choice.

Ishant has fared better under Virat, and maybe in the future his captaincy will further improve Ishants numbers as with him it is all in the head , if Ishant can bowl even like Bhuvi or better Shami he would be invaluable coz he has pace with bounce

As expressbowling posted, Ishant is much better now than before, over the last 2 seasons. He also is considered the leader of the attack by captain Kohli, so he is indeed the spearhead.

Ishant is a very good 3rd pacer.  You can't make a Tendulkar out of a Manjrekar no matter how hard you try.  Luckily for India, we have the likes of Shami, Bhuvi so we don't need Ishant to single handedly rip teams apart.

I'm hoping injuries don't mess things up, and if they don't - a first choice attack of Shami, Bhuvi, Ishant/Yadav will do really well in England/RSA/Oz.

Ishant is a slam dunk as your spearhead?

Ishant is the Michael Jordan of fast bowling?

NBA stands for Noballs allowed?

Ishant has the magic and the johnson to deliver big wins.

Best I could come up with :ahaa:

Kapil Dev feels that the Ishant Sharma  lacks the necessary discipline to become a consistent wicket-taker in the longer format of the game.

He feels that Ishant lacks in certain areas which are crucial for someone leading the pace attack.  I think Ishant is a very good bowler. He is a genuine quick bowler with great height. But he has to develop the wicket-taking ball, that ability to take wickets at crucial times. Perhaps that's where he is lacking. There is no shortage of ability and talent but somewhere the talent to take wickets is missing," he said.

A look at Ishant’s numbers in the Test format proves that Kapil’s words hold good value. He has picked up 209 wickets in 66 matches at an average of 36.71 and strike rate of 66.6 – not impressive numbers by any stretch of the imagination.

Kapil also lamented the inconsistent bowling that has often plagued Ishant at times, especially in the shorter formats of the game and said that the 28-year-old has failed to do justice to his abilities. "One needs to bowl better, consistently bowl a better line and length. It's not about bowling two very good deliveries in an over but you have to bowl five good balls.
