The only question is who bolsters the lower middle order:

- Gambhir (play him in lower middle for tackling spinners, he can still play spin right?)

- H. Pandya

- Karun Nair

- Jayant Yadav (lower order, NOT lower middle)

- none of the above??

Ranji bowlers simply lack the skill and discipline to expose batsmen's weaknesses. Which is why all these people on here going gaga about youngsters like Pant need to open their eyes to the gap between domestic and international cricket.

He hasnt scored "bucket loads" at all, one first class 100 in the last 2/3 years , that too against a weak odisha team. Even this year he got destroyed by Sreenath Arvind and Mithun.

He has one ton since 2013. That's hardly scoring a bucket of runs. He was averaging around 37 before the call up.

I think he has a couple of 90s pretty recently also so recent domestic form has been there.

Yh in duldeep trophy but if u look at the scorecards he was comfortably out preformed by others plus those pitches were roads.

For extra depth in batting and it's gonna be a turner where spinners will be crucial.Hardik fits in who can be our support bowler as a seamer plus bats too.

team for 2nd test:-

Rahul,Vijay,Pujara,Kohli,Rahane,Hardik/Nair,Ashwin,Saha,Jadeja,Mishra/Jayant,Shami.

9 of the players marked in bold are certain to play.

Agree with the 9, but Mishra and Umesh will be the other two retained. Only Gauti swapped out for KL

Have you seen his record this season? The guy has scored ~800 runs at an average of 114, SR of 113 and hit 44 sixes. He is far ahead of anyone else which is all you can ask a 20-year-old to do to prove himself. Can you give any other example of an Indian batsman in the recent past scoring as many runs at both an average and SR of more than 100?

Pant was clobbering bowlers of "International class" in the IPL. He's a ridiculous talent and probably the reason why a team like DD(who's managed by the excellent Dravid) shelled out so much amount for him. Now that I think of it, DD has Iyer, Samson, Pant and Nair. I'm betting all four will be regular in the next three years or so in one format or another.

They didnt confirm Rahul will play as the opener. They could slot him in at No.6. Gambhir could still be retained as opener in the XI. Batting looks a bit thin with 5 regular bats. Especially if its a turning pitch batting wouldnt be so easy and Eng spinners dont seem incompetent. I would look to go in with 6 batsmen. 2 spinners and 2 seamers should be the bowling attack.

Saha had better IPL stats than Pant last year.  So think about that before getting too carried away.

Not doubting Pant's talent or potential at all but no way should we thrust him into test cricket immediately as some have suggested on the basis of clobbering domestic attacks. The shorter format is where he first needs to get his opportunity.

If it's a spinning track I'd make 3 swaps,Rahul for Gambhir,Jayant for Mishra as POMS are largely left handed

and Hardik for Umesh.

spinners and fielders failed last game, they need to fill those gaps. And Gambhir was the weak link in batting so makes sense to replace him with Rahul.
