Dhoni would be aware, and a little paranoid, that he cannot afford to lose after Virat's successful test campaign. Nightmare scenario for him would be everyone comparing Virat's aggression and energy with his stale and rigid leadership. I, for one, would be curious to watch his selection calls given this backdrop. Yep this will be an interesting series in that perspective. Dhoni will have to be at the top of his game as a player and as a captain. This competition will lead to him being proactive which will only benefit team India. Flipside is that scapegoats will get screwed harder if we lose. Edited December 14, 2016 by Mosher
Lannister Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Should rest Kohli, Shami and Ashwin. As long as Kohli is there, Rahul and Pandey won't get much game time. At the moment we need one opener - should try Pant and one lower order batsman who can play at 6 - Jadhav is not the answer. Since CT will be in England 2 spinners will be enough in the squad, so the final spot will be between Jadeja and Mishra(?). Pandya, Ummi, Bhuvi, Bhumra should be our first choice fast bowlers, and I would have 2 more reserves just in case. It's a toss up between Shami, Sran, and Kulakarni (?) for the last 2 spots.

I feel Shami is not that effective in limited overs as he don't have many varieties to bowl with. He's more of a hit-the-deck kind of bowler who is more suited for Australian conditions. Ummi can swing the ball as well as get it to reverse. He just need avoid bowling loose deliveries.
Texy Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Is Varun Aaron completely out of the picture now that we have to settle for all the trundlers?

Faiz Fazal got the Zim game as a reward for topping domestic run getters chart previous year. Bit of a limited player with slowish strike rate. I don't mind BCCI giving this kind of selection once in a while to the domestic "triers" - keeps even the 2nd rung guys motivated and you never know, someone might just step it up at the next level and prove themselves. Sran is in the mix I'm sure, we have few quality left-armers and he's young and quickish, so will get opportunities if he stays fit and keeps improving.

Riju23 Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Ugh please no Rayudu. Why is MSK Prasad a selector? He sucks haha I think we definitely keep Sir Jaddu - remember how effective he was in England in 2013 Champions Trophy? He bats well on those pitches too, and of course his fielding is a big plus. I think he beats A. Patel in all three facets of the game in English conditions
Samcric Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Rohit and Dhawan are too slow in the first 8 overs and lately have been getting out without making up for the slow starts. Would love to see Pant open. Yes, he is young but has done nothing to suggest he can't open and needs to be 'protected'. In fact, pressure might be more at no. 5 or 6 especially while chasing. Raina and Kohli both established themselves as good ODI batsmen by batting in top 3 and scoring series of 100s. Same with Dhoni with that Vizag innings. If you have a player that you think can attack and get 100s, you need to play him in top 3. With Virat at 3, only option for Pant is to open. If pitches are like the NZ ODI series, opening the innings with the hard new ball coming on to the bat will be the best chance for him to play his strokes and express himself. If he plays and is asked to keep, I would be very happy coz that would mean the team management has confidence in his keeping. Would be slightly disappointing to see him play and not keep. So, for me, team should be: Rohit (KL Rahul if Rohit is unfit) Pant Kohli Dhoni KL Rahul (Manish if Rohit is unfit) Kedar Jadhav (Hooda if Kedar fails in first 2 ODIs) Pandya (Jayant Yadav if Pandya is unfit) Axar/Jadeja (rotation across matches) Ashwin/Jayant (rotation across matches) Bhuvi/Shami (rotation across matches) Bumrah
