This selectors are averse to taking risks. The most baffling selections are  in the practice matches. How could the selector select Vinay,Dinda again. They should have been brave & select some young pacers.

My other fear is if ,Ashwin,Jadeja,Rahul,Umesh, gets injured during this series what are the selectors 'backup plan..

The selectors should have rested Ashwin,Jadeja ,Umesh & should have selected Kuldeep,Nadeem etc.

Most of the players are coming back after injuries, Rahul is very fragile.

Selection of Yuvraj shows one thing which is very clear, there are no big hitters in Indian cricket right now. Who is the one player who can at least in theory match Yuvraj's late order hitting.

Did Yuvraj become the hitter from day 1? Pandya brothers, Hooda all three have the potential to become one such hitter. You need to take risk and invest. Selectors took risk and gave chance to a 19 year old Yuvraj.

Yuvraj got 672 runs at an avg of 84 this Ranji season. He can also bowl 4-5 decent overs. Imo Yuvraj is not a bad selection provided there is no other outstanding performers at present with those skills.

Rahane and nehra are bad choices.

The most bafling selection is the seamers in A teams. Even dump fools won't pick vk, Dinda, kaul and nehra ahead of rajput, nathu, aniket and siraj.

Yuvraj always scores in domestic cricket.

Next T20 world cup is in 2018 .

So Nehra is a realistic option. If he is continuing to perform in IPL and national colours , he should be picked .At least until we find another good left arm seamer. Also he is generally a very good mentor for youngsters too.

Agree with picking the likes of Yuvi and Rahane .Awful selections .At least with Yuvi, maybe his decent domestic form has deserved a call up but continuing to pick Rahane is just clueless .It's not just that affecting our ODI form but also badly affecting his test form as well.He could have used these Odis to play Ranji trophy games and improve his form and skill against spin.We are unnecessarily causing damage to both test and odi team with this selection.

Not sure about Pant, his terrific form has been in Ranji so should have been picked for the test team first .I really don't like picking players for one format based on another .Hopefully he gets a decent run at top of the order in T20s .

Two non selections I like is Dhawan not in T20 team and Axar Patel out of both squads.

Axar Patel is injured so not picked. I certainly rate him better than Jaddu as a T20 and LOI b

Nehra's come back has been overrated. He hasn't done anything to be picked really.

Who should have been picked instead then, in terms of big hitters which you want? Yuvraj had shown in in the Asia cup, especially against Sri Lanka that he can still score quickly.

He was supposed to be in 2020 world cup, the tournament after world cup but injured his ankle and withdrew. After that, we did not play much in twenty20s. So he never got a chance again. India played two twenty20 at the last minute in Florida and Yuvi did not feature there.

So they have gone with the right choice. Our ODI team needs a proven performer like Yuvi over 4 youngsters right before a major tournament. He is fit and scoring runs and if you can play twenty20 then you can surely play ODI's. As long as he can rotate and support Kohli and Dhoni, we are in good hands.

Unless you know better hitter down the order who has also proven that he can rotate.

Also remember, we have been just a slightly decent odi team in ODI's from a while and now we do not have Rohit Sharma also, a senior ODI bat who has scored runs for us in recent history. So only Kohli and Dhoni are the ones who might have had to take too much pressure of scoring runs. So perfect time to have a senior like Yuvi in the ODI team to take some weight oft the shoulders of Dhoni and Kohli.

In CT 2000, we introduced a 19 year old Yuvraj, so, why cant we introduce someone young. Last time, Yuvraj played ODIs he had a very good FC season and barely did anything. We are going backwards. We won 2007 T20 with youngsters. We won 2013 CT with new inclusions like Dhawan who opened, Rohit was promoted to open, Bhuvi was fairly new too. No one expected this young team to win, but they did. Experience in shorter formats is highly overrated. Our most experienced players played in CT 2009 and we could not beat even Pakistan. I would have picked Deepak Hooda instead who can bowl a few overs of spin too like Yuvraj and can hit big and had a good FC season, 789 runs averaging 71 with an SR of 70.

If I am not wrong in the same tournament a young Zaheer Khan too made his debut and blew the batsmen away with those quick yorkers. The selectors have been too defensive with their selections these days. Many youngsters to choose from and they pick Yuvi. Even more pathetic are the selections in the warm up matches. Rayudu, Vinay, Dinda, Mohit

Yuvraj was very good at hitting quick bowlers till 2011....after that he has been unable to do that.  He is often late on the ball and gets bogged down when facing a fast bowler.  While batting at No.6 ( the only position left if he plays ) he will have to play big shots against quick bowlers while playing CT.   He may look great against medium pacers and  in domestic cricket but has not been able to do much against fast bowlers in recent times.  He WAS  a proven performer but not anymore. He choice is a gamble now and he may do well on one day but can't be depended upon in internationals any more.

Picking Pant would have been better. He was hitting Mustafizur bowling at  around 140 k  in the IPL  ( he does that in T20s  )    with ease and has matured as a batsman since then. He would definitely have been a better investment for CT17.   Unless we  invest in youngsters we will never have new players when needed.   Even Deepak Hooda is a good pick for No.6. He is a high average FC batsman who can hit the ball bigand has hit quick bowlers in the IPL.

Yes, Zak too debuted in that CT. we need Kiran More back as selector. His was the best selection committee, IMO. We assume they didnt take risk with main squad but what the F is wrong with them not taking new players for warmups. What new will likes of Dinda, Legund, Mohit will offer that we dont already know. They are not internal standards how much will they have to play to probe that.

In CT , chances are that Rohit and Dhawan are going to open. That means Rahul at No. 5 or No. 4.

Another option to prepare for CT could have been to introduce a new opener as proxy for Rohit and allowing Rahul to practice for his middle-order slot in CT.

That was not done.

Yuvraj showed in under 19 wc that he can hit, and Hooda hasn't shown such ability. Pant could have been tried as I have mentioned earlier.

Now BCCI go by usually IPL or A tours. They usually select one player only from A tours and Manish Pandey out performed most and hence he is part of theteam. Hooda and co will need to keep scorig runs to get into the team or wait for chanpions trophy to be over.

Kohli knows a thing or two of why he is picking Yuvi. If he does not perform here he is going out. I would have liked to see Pant too in ODI's over twenty20 so he could be given some time to settle in.

How can Deepak Hooda score in an A game when he has not been picked  ?

His performance in this season in Ranji Trophy 2016-17  pointing to recent form.   Look at the high SR + average combo

                                                                                   AVERAGE                   SR

DJ Hooda 8 13 2 789 293* 71.72 1135 69.51 3 2 1 92 8
(Baroda)

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ranji-trophy-2016-17/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=11519;type=tournament

His performance in U19 WC

Deepak Hooda starred with an all-round performance, scoring an unbeaten 76 off 57 balls and then taking three wickets for 31 runs in 10 overs with his off-breaks.

http://www.rediff.com/cricket/report/u19-wc-hoodas-all-round-performance-helps-india-to-5th-place/20140224.htm

But his most valuable contribution in the tournament was seen on 15th February, when in the important match against arch rivals Pakistan, he not only scored a quick fire 22, but excelled with the ball as well.

He has got a cool and contented temperament, as a result of which Deepak is a decent finisher. Perhaps that is one of the reasons that in the 4 matches he had played in this tournament, he remained not out on 2 occasions

http://www.sportskeeda.com/cricket/deepak-hooda-young-all-rounder-potential

He did very well in IPL 2015 and had a SR of  159  with 11 sixes including hits off fast bowlers.

I do not see such talent in any of the players you mentioned.Yuvi never got consistent test run early in his career if he had maybe he would have ended up as a better test batsman.

How Hooda has not shown such ability? He had a 65 ball 100 in a quadrangular U19 tournament. Only in his first T20 game in IPL, he hit 30 ball 50. This  IPL season he has been striking at 70. He is someone who can bat as a proper batsman and can hit when required. He is not someone who has only one gear. He can play according to the situation.

Yuvraj had problems outside offstump and Struggled against short ball.So his test batting was always in doubt.

Same way Pandyas and Hoodas are also hitters from day 1.  Pandya had an SR of 180 in IPOL in his debut season. Krunal had an SR of 191 last IPL, Hooda had an SR of 158 in his debut IPL.

Lot of players have those problems, Cook has scored 10k plus runs without ever knowing fully where his offstump is, IMHO Yuvi struggled in tests because he tried to be different when playing tests.

If he had played his natural game chances for him succeeding were greater but he was trying to displace guy like VVS so it was hard and I feel thats why he tried too hard in tests.

YUvi was not highly successful even in ODIs at least for a decade, averaged less than 30 for long. It was only from 2005-06 onward he found some consistency.
