Uncapped fast bowler Billy Stanlake and batsman Chris Lynn have been included in Australia's squad for the five ODIs against Pakistan, while experienced batsmen George Bailey and Aaron Finch have been axed.

"This is an extremely important series for us as, following it in a ODI context, we have the Chappell-Hadlee series in New Zealand and then, in mid-year, the ICC Champions Trophy, a tournament which we won in 2006 and 2009," Trevor Hohns, the interim head of selection, said. "We believe this squad is an exciting combination that covers all bases for us over the course of the five matches against Pakistan.

"Billy Stanlake is an exciting prospect who bowls with genuine pace and is a player who has made a terrific return to action for the Adelaide Strikers in the KFC Big Bash League after a lengthy time out through injury. Billy himself and the medical staff involved in his recovery have done a great job, he's back playing again and playing well and we believe that now is the right time to give him a chance to stretch himself.

"Chris Lynn is in superb form for the Brisbane Heat and although that is a different form of the game we believe it is right that we give him the chance to show whether he can convert his wonderful ball-striking ability to ODIs.

"Usman Khawaja has been in excellent touch throughout this Test summer, is able to bat anywhere in the top order and deserves another chance to demonstrate his ODI credentials.

"Both George Bailey and Aaron Finch have been prominent players in the ODI squad over the past few years but both of them have missed out on places in this squad.

"George has scored one fifty in his past 10 ODIs and, while his form has not been disastrous, it has not been to his usual standard so we have decided to look at younger players in the middle order in this instance. Aaron, across the past four series in the Caribbean, Sri Lanka, South Africa and the Chappell-Hadlee series, has scored four fifties in his last 18 innings. I have spoken to both players and they understand our perspective as selectors."

This is what you do when play at home and not picked Has beens like Yuvraj and Nehra. My opinion will be same even if they do well. and what is the problem with warmups selections. They cannot take proper calls even in those squads recycling likes of Vinay Kumar, Dinda.

All the teams are giving chances to youngsters & we are still stuck with Dinda,Vinay Kumar.

Squad is packed with big hitters and exciting fast bowlers,performance in BBL rewarded whereas we are stuck in the noughties.

Warner, Chris Lynn, Head, Maxwell, Faulkner that's one scary big hitting line-up and Smith to anchor the innings. Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and tall Billy scary quick bowling line-up too. Zampa's a good spinner too. This is the way forward in ODI's and T20's. Need big hitters, I am not talking about hacks like Afridi but batsmen who have a decent batting technique and ability to strike the ball hard from ball one. While our selectors are recycling has beens in batting and bowling

We dont really have many guys like Chris Lynn/Maxwell though, people who can hit sixes on demand.

But that does not mean we go back to selecting has beens. We may not have many players like Lynn/Maxwell but select youngsters who at least have the potential to hit big.

Lynn, Maxwell did not became hitters overnight. Need to give chances to people who have the potential become one.

Why have Indian selectors  suddenly become so averse to trying youngsters  ?

 

Why are they afraid to try young fast bowlers even  in practice matches  ?

 

Avesh Khan and Alzarri Joseph both did well and bowled quick in the U19 world cup.. Alzarri has played test matches and Avesh is not  even in his Ranji team....why this attitude suddenly  ?

They repeatedly showed at the FC and club level what they could do before they got those chances.  Its not like Lynn and Maxwell were picked in the national setup after a few good games based on "potential".    

 

Australia has a long track record of using bilateral ODIs as auditions for a couple of young guys - reality is that BCCI selectors haven't really done that, ever.  Our template is to send young guys for A tour, and use tours to Zimbabwe and West Indies where "seniors" get rested.  But we won't get those tours scheduled at a convenient time when we need to get some guys in - so definitely an opportunity missed this series.  I think ODI is the best way to debut a young bowler - less pressure than T20, and test is just too much of a punt.

Watched Billy boy bowl in Big Bash. He's going to rip apart the poor Pak line up. Add Cummins, Starc in the mix and all I can see is carnage. Australia should have rested Starc and played a lesser bowler for pity sake..

Billy is in line for a ODI debut with Hazlewood being rested for the 1st ODI. Excited to see him have a go at Pak batsmen. While our promising quicks are made to grind on flat pitches till they break down and vanish from the scene. They don't even make the team in the warm up matches.
