How to get rid of Shikhar Dhawan?

Dhawan deserved this series at least given how good an ODI bat he has been.

In fact he should probably go to the Champs Trophy too- lets face it, who else can be there as opener? Manish Pandey should not open I know he has done it a bit in IPL but shouldn't in ODIs. Rahane isn't an ODI player so for me The only other options are Mandeep, or Mukund- Mandeep should have been in the squad but I defo think Shikar is a better bat

He was always going to be in this series. His scores in the last 3 innings before this series were 68, 126 and 78, that too in Australia.

Ungrateful fans.  Sure he's struggling.  But he has delivered for us often. And his ODI record is still very good.  His replacement KL hasn't exactly lit things up either in the last 2 games.  And Pant has done nothing yet at the international level.

I'm not a big believer in Dhawan.  But so glad that VK and the selectors don't have a Pakistani style use and throw fickle mentality with our players.

Pant has done nothing because he has not even made his debut...that applies to every cricketer with or without potential out there who has never made his debut  what kind of a logic is that?

Logic is simple, although tubelight might take a while to light up - Dhawan has a proven track record in ODIs, home and away - along with a temperament that shines through in crunch games.  His ODI record is still decent - its not like he's put up a long string of poor scores and innings.  You don't just bench that kind of 'money' player for an unproven commodity, and that too off of a couple of bad games.  Even one with good potential like Rishabh.  Pantgasming fans can disagree.

Shikhar is deservingly out of T20 squad - he's atrocious there.  And deservingly the 3rd opener on the bench Test Team India. But in ODIs, he deserves a bit of rope - he has the game to be effective and has gotten it done time and again.  Fickle fattu fans' feelings fail when faced with that reality check.

So tell me this....had we lost this match today and somehow Dhawan made a 100 in the 3rd ODI to win India the series...would that make him a crunch player or based on the 2 failures make him inconsistent boom or bust type of a player?

Other thing to remember is Dhawan has ODI experience in England (and performed quite well as I recall). I know he was sh-t in the tests in england haha but that's not as relevant when considering players for the CT

Dhawan has a 100 and a 50 in his last 4 ODI innings.  That's when you search his record for last 12 months.  In the last 2 years, he averages 40+ with a SR of 88+.  Add to these decent numbers, he has demonstrated big-game temperament, by out-doing his numbers in big tournaments.  In addition, he is the only player in the top 3, who takes on the responsibility of playing with a bit of risk to get the innings run-rate up.  VK doesn't do that, and we don't want him to.  Mr. 264, who I know you would willingly give a blumkin to, is notoriously slow up-front.  Taking all these facts into account, you don't drop a player of Dhawan's track record, off of 2 bad games.

As I have said earlier in this thread - its not like I'm a big believer in Dhawan.  Given a convincing alternative who can do better, I'm all for upgrading.  But the alternatives are as flawed as Shikhar - albeit in different ways.  Rahane bats too slow, and still fails to put up big scores. KL Rahul flashed potential, but a 100 against Zimbabwe, and 2 failures against England in 350+ games don't show him in good light either.  Pant is unproven.  His time will surely come, and soon.  But no need to desperately get him in, at the cost of damaging the confidence of not just Dhawan, but all batsmen in the team.  All of this being said, if Shikhar goes into an extended slump, this can be valid conversation.  But not off of 2 bad innings.

All this is true.  But, what may work against Dhawan is his recent injury break after which he has looked a bit out of touch in the 2 ODIs and 1 practice match so far.   When Rohit is back, the other spot will be a fight between Rahul and Dhawan and Rahul may get the nod based on some of his recent good innings, albeit in tests and T20s.

After CT is over, it makes sense to try some new players to see how they are and whether they may add value to our team in WC 19.  Pant will definitely be the first among them. Whether he does well or not, only time will tell, but he and the others will have to  replace some established guys.

Agree with you.  But disagree with the mentality of the OP who desperately wants to get rid of Dhawan asap, and tubelight, who appears to have written him off already.

Yes....Dhawan has served our team really well in ODIs so far     ( although he has disappointed in tests and T20Is )

If ICF was the selection panel, then Kohli would be the only guy from the regulars to be selected.

The other 10 would be IPL and Ranji guys that we've identified as must haves.

In the last 12 months he has played only 5 games, but is still averaging 50+ in that period, despite his 2 failures this series.

He is here to stay for a while, unfortunately.

And in the last 24 months he is averaging 40.

you forget in that time he was dropped during the T20 world cup for poor form. Granted T20 is a different format.

his test average has dipped below 40 and he has had a very average run with the bat despite facing some poor opposition in the format.

Post that good Australia ODI series there has been a general decline in his performance across the formats.

Ideally we should get Pant to replace Dhawan but he is not in the ODI squad. So, for the moment we need to pick Pandey and have him open.
