How about Ashwin as an opener for ODIs?

He has got technique, temperament and skills of a good batsman as evident from test matches. But due to batting too low in ODIs, he is not able to play his natural game and had to go for wild slogs which is definitely not his game. We are unable to use Ashwin's batting in ODIs.

With our regular openers struggling with eventual 12/1 almost everyday, it makes sense to open the batting with Ashwin and Rohit. It will help us to play an extra bowler or batsman lower down the order.

Very out of the box but I like. Very like. 

 

However, you know our fans ...right. If he fails, just like I Pathan, Ashwin would be labelled as a fail all rounder and might loose his main bowling spot.

I rather play Rahane then. Rahane is a brilliant player but just does not make the cut for a no.1 team or wannabe no.1 side like Australia. Simple reason is that he does not rotate or pick up strike rate in ODI's.  He can walk into line ups like that of New Zealand, Pakistan and even South Africa as good replacements but not for an Indian ODI  team. 

 

Similarly, Ashwin will probably be the same or actually worse. He is known as all rounder because of his achievements in test cricket. He hasn't been able to bat under pressure that well in ODI's whenever the asking run rate is over 7 and he has to tonk the ball. Hard to trust Ashwin.

 

I know we did not do that well in this series in terms of our opening p'ship but we are not that desperate that we bring Ashwin on top.

I would take Ashwin over likes of Rahane anyday but I would prefer someone like Pant in the longer run. Ashwin is a decent bat but he can't score quickly which is needed in the powerplay overs. I would rather go with likes of Pant and Rohit with Kohli and KL Rahul slotting in at 3 & 4. They can be followed by Dhoni, Jadhav, Pandya and Jaddu at 5, 6, 7 & 8.

I think we need a multi dimensional palyer who can adapt to different conditions , different scenarios. It is a spot held by Ganguly, Tendulkar, Sehwag.  We need strong specialist batsman. Ash runs slow. He is not a power hitter. Right now we have inexpereinced. Nobody is remotely close to that calibre. Right now I would go with Manish Pandey if possible as he has opened in IPL

Brilliant idea, he has the game for it, and will change team Dynamics, also for me better the Rahane or Dhawan as he won't waste deliveries, Rahane is not cut for ODI and persisting will hurt him more, effect his test batting as well as any chances in future to work on his game and make a comeback, coz he has the talent no doubt, but needs to work on strike rotation, power game and fitness

This is so 80s thinking .Ashwin opening in ODIs so that we can waste our power plays even more.

We already have Rohit who is a slow started so open with Ashwin can't score fast to open alongside him .We can end up every powerplay with 30 for no loss when every team will be going hell for leather.

Unless we can find an opener who go big like Pant emerges in the IPL , Dhawan and Rohit are our best openers and should open in Champions trophy.We need to find openers who score fast and move forward not a slow plodler like Ashwin and move back to the eighties .

Ashwin opening is an absurd idea to put it mildly

Would prefer someone explosive like Pant as an opener to partner Rohit who starts off generally a bit slowly (more than covers for it later).

Rohit is the first choice opener in ODIs.  he is a slow starter and does not use the power-plays effectively.

 

We need a high SR proper batsman to complement him.  Need to try such batters.  Ashwin does not suit this role.

 

 

First one that should be tried is Pant.....and this up-coming T20 series is the ideal situation to start  this.

Ashwin is master of converting singles into dots and 2s into 1s.  Its one thing to bat well and hit nice looking boundaries in test matches.  Quite another to do it in LOI cricket with the run-rate pressure and spread fields.  And even in test cricket, Ash has yet to bat well against pace.  I expect him to do so, but LOI cricket batting is something that Ash has shown, time and again, its just not his cup of sambhar.  

 

Opening the batting.  Why don't we open our bowling with Virat Kohli then.

No way! I would rather send Jadeja in as opener and hopefully get a 30-40 quick runs out of him. Sounds crazy but could work out well also. After all, Jayasurya was a lower order batsman and spinner for 6-7 years before becoming opener. Ashwin is more useful as a lower order batsman capable of batting sensibly and building useful partnerships.
