Problems with having too many " old " players in the team

1)  If  too many " old " players  are in the team then there will come a time in the near future when 3 or 4 new players will be needed at the same time. New players take some time to get acclimatized at international level .....we cannot expect them to start performing from match one.  Bilateral T20Is,  with no World T20 near, is the ideal time and format to develop new players and get them used to international cricket.   This same issue is applicable in ODIs and tests too....but thankfully, we don't have this issue with our test team.

 

Even if the " old " players are doing well at  present  ( which is not the case in T20Is for us regarding all the selected " old " players  )   some planning regarding the future needs to be there for the above mentioned reason.  Otherwise, the team may struggle badly in a big tournament with either out-of-form-or-ability " old " players or many newbies forced to play suddenly.

 

There is no need to bring in too many new players at once but introducing them one or two at a time should be done so that the transition is gradual and smooth.

 

2)  Another issue is having batsmen who are suitable for modern LOIs which require a high SR approach.  This becomes even more important for T20Is, ODI first 10 overs and ODI last 10 overs...... where we need batsmen who can start hitting from ball one, have power and can improvise well.  New-age batters, who have grown up batting with this approach, will be more suitable for this rather than  older guys who are more used to getting set and then hitting, which often lacks extreme improvisation.

 

3) The next issue is fielding.  At one time, Yuvraj and Raina were good fielders but not any more. Most fit youngsters will be much better than them.

 

We have brought back Gambhir, Yuvraj, Raina, Nehra, Parthiv....almost everyone who is 30+ and have played for India in the past and have not retired.....they may serve us well in patches.....but the bigger issues, discussed above, will remain unresolved.

Kohli seems a captain who prefers experience over youngsters .

We have played nearly 10-12 tests at home and didn't try any young Pacers.This will hurt us when we go overseas.

Now we are calling back all the older players for T20s when everyone is going youth.

The selectors doesn't help him either . Absolutely pathetic selections after selections going for useless old players even in warm up games .

T20 format should be used for trying out newer players and bold strategies. Instead of that, we have reputation based selection that takes Indian cricket backwards while other countries zoom ahead. Our oldies want to hang around to preserve their IPL brand value. But the selectors should say enough is enough and drop them. Indian cricket fans deserve better than years of prolonged mediocrity.

Wow so much experience! BC we will surely win the next T20 WC. But this is missing 2 key players Sarandeep Singh and MSK Prasad.

Indian players who have retired 6 months to a year back have all appointed Afridi as consultant on how to " un-retire " successfully

They should not play more than one 'senior ' player at a time.

Nehra should be asked to preserve his body for IPL.

That is precisely the point of this thread.   When new players are introduced to a format, they are usually not that consistent for quite some time. Hence, bilateral LOI series need to be used for the purpose of acclimatizing young players when we are not preparing for a big tournament.

 

Another issue is....Manish Pandey does not come across as an ideal T20 player to me.
