Is Smith a better test player than Kohli

high 40s vs high 50s. And both have gotten there on the back of 2 years. So unless this difference exists after 10 years, there is always comparison between two players in a purple patch.

Yh round 59 up to 60 and 49.9 down to "40s". To make the gap seem bigger than it is.

Smith has played only 1 innings above 30 in this series so far and that had 4 dropped catches and another plumb LBW in that innings, which we could not review as we had exhausted our reviews as usual.

 

Kohli has looked comfortable in almost all the innings in this series....got a bad decision once and left  straight deliveries twice, which he normally does not.

 

Smith is surely dependent on hand-eye coordination much more than Kohli and his peak may end as he becomes 32 or 33.

 

Starting from the SA tour 2013, Kohli has done well in almost all test series and in all countries, barring that England tour 2014.

 

Kohli's peak as a test batsman is yet to come.

In tests Smith is undoubtedly the best of the new Fab 4 way ahead of the others at this point of time. He averages 60+ with no flaw in the distribution of his runs, he has done well in all countries unlike the other 3. But I think he relies too much on hand eye co ordination and has a faltu technique. He will fade away at a young age like Gundappa Vishwanath/Sehwag.

 

In ODIs Kohli is number 1 but Smith did very well in QF, SF and F of CWC 2015, so that is a huge plus for him compared to Kohli who has done very little in the 2 world cups. 

 

In T20s Kohli is the GOAT  but the format pales below tests and ODIs. 

 

Overall my ranking will be

1. Smith

2. Kohli/Root

3. KW

 

But I think eventually De Kock and Rahul will surpass KW and be direct competitors to the Big 3.

However you may feel about the Smith vs Kohli debate, can you all stop comparing Sachin with Kohli. Indian media and a section of our former players are on overdrive these days to prove that Kohli>=Sachin and that is BS. Sachin of 90s>>>>any version of Virat considering the bowling quality and average scores then. Only 3 batsmen averaged above 50 in tests in the 90s(SRT=59, Lara=52 and Steve Waugh=50) and in ODIs Sachin was averaging 40+ @ SR of 87. Unreal, only King Viv and ABDV have such domination over their peers. But the real clincher for me is WCs. Sachin was top scorer in 1996 and 2003 WC and 2nd highest in 2011. His WC record won't be broken for a long time in spite of the easier pitches and 50 yard boundaries we see these days. Kohli's WC record is nothing special.

In Tests, Smith is better. Kohli is a better LOI player imo. People have forgotten his 40 odd in the CT 2013 Final when we were reeling at 66/5. I believe that would be considered a high pressure game no?

That was basically a T20 game and Virat is the T20 GOAT. Besides let us be honest Champions Trophy doesn't hold the same importance as a proper 50 over World Cup.
