He shouldn't be dropped, but he needs to learn from these failures.

Ashwin is not a good bowler on a so-so pitch, being the only spinner. That much, is obvious. He thrives with a kanjoos makkhichoos spinner on the other end to bottle things up, unless the pitch is a square turner.

Um ok. Still does not change the fact that Sydney is the best pitch for spinners on that continent. And 7-161 isn't too much better than 5-140*

It's better than current performance considering that Swann stood up and took 5-fer on day 5 against much better line up.

Ashwin is kind of the easiest punching bag. Yes he has been inconsistent and poor but he has bowled well in the last couple of hours.

He should be dropped but not sure hiw

much better the alternatives are

if we play them the we will know their ability, we have already seen Ashwin's best

I am tired of him seeing him bowl toothlessly on a day 5 wicket. Can't create pressure. In SA he could have easily bowled better previous time. In England he could have done better. Now in Australia he is struggling to dismiss even tailenders. What is the point of having him in the side if he can't help the team at Adelaide.

yep toothless is the word. Even Moeen Ali has won matches for Eng in Eng and in SA but this guy cant be dependent upon to take any wkts on even day 5 pitch

Don't necessarily think if taking 5-fer on a 5th day pitch is better than taking a 3-fer on a 2nd day pitch.  That lineup was better on paper, but we all know that Punter in 2011 was as good as Rahane is today against spin, plus 3 of his 7 wickets were against tail-enders.

All 5 of Ashwin's wickets are against the top order.

A wrist spinner from India, who's never taken a 10 wicket haul in the long format, even at first class level, averages over 30 and has less than 4 wickets/match does not deserve to play over arguably the greatest Indian spinner since Kumble.

eh ?  The fact that OZ is the graveyard of visiting finger spinners, is not an opinion, its a fact - cricinfo had an article on it recently. Murali averages 70+ there. Ajmal averages 50+  So does Swann. Harbhajan is close too.

So 5 wickets @ less than 30 in a test = success for a finger spinner. Its just that simple.

They all bowled against that Aussie team where everyone one was beast. Ashwin bowled against Aussie teams which are worst in 50 years.

Lyon was bowling hand grenades on the same pitch. Ashwin struggles to have a decent stock ball. Centurion, Southampton and now Adelaide that's 3 times he's let the team down in the 2nd innings this away cycle. Can't wait for Kuldeep to kick him out of the XI.

Did you see the difference between Kohli and Payne's field placements to the tail ? You cannot exert pressure if your captain is a facking moron with the field placement. Especially for a slower bowler.
