Is Shankar's game more suited for ODI or Test?

Do you see him taking Pandya's spot in Tests, and Pandya being an LOI specialist?

Odi- no , pandya is a better bowler n more of a hitter. Shankar wud on most day days give u 5-7 overs so he can be the 6th bowler not 5th . Shankar is more of a solid batsman who can bat at 4,5 .

So diff roles

Test - Pandya n Shankar shud be switched acc to condition

Helpful bowling conditions play Shankar- As his bowling wud get assistance and the team wud need more of batting cushion

Flat patta tracks- Pandya shud play as he can bat us and get quick runs and as 5th bowler he is a bloody good option. Generally opp tend to relax when a 5th bowler comes, but against someone like pandya that can prove very costly

Play them Acc to situation n demand of the team

Question is, where will the new players come in   ?  Pandey and Iyer are ideally top 4 batters and may bat at No.5 but not lower.

No.4 slot is open but Rahul deserves a chance first in place of Yuvi.  He has shown the ability to play top international bowlers and is a very big six hitter, ideal for No.4 slot in ODIs.

No.3 slot is taken.

Both the ODI openers have done well and average 42+ and 43 +.  Rohit's  SR, especially at the beginning of the innings, is an issue but don't see him being replaced in the near future.

Only chance is one of them being rested as part of rotation policy.  Rohit was rested in WI.   Will Dhawan be rested in the SL series ?

If Dhoni is in the squad, he will bat at No.5 and won't be dropped.

At No.6, Jadhav maybe rested in some games.... but only Pant, Vijay Shankar or Krunal Pandya can bat at No.6.

Won't be easy for Iyer or  Pandey t to play.   Iyer has the best chance if Dhawan is rested and he opens. But, then again,  Rahane may play.

There are enough places to be questioned , ideally a competition is always said to be good as it helps us to choose better option. Unfortunately in Indian cricket we tend to give seniority and past n individual records a lot of pref

Openers- Either their has to be change in Dhawan-rohit startegy or change in pair. Low RR in 1st 10 overs, not reliable in tough conditions like Sa,NZ ........they cant be permanent fixtures . Their is a lot of scope in Opening pair.....they both have numbers but we can do better.

Although dhawan phenomenon of becoming a diff player in Wc will always keep him there.

No -4 Few players need to be tested - Rahul, PAnt, pandey , Iyer ( may the best man win) about so many players well we have to choose the best . All wont come in team and become top players straight away. Kohli came in 2011 wc lineup by breaking door and these guys have to do that . New players take time to get at top of their game and we cant have so many youngsters trying to figure their game out in Initial yrs.

No 5- As of now for few series it shud be dhoni, but time is ticking on him. I dnt beilve its the time to give up on him but he needs to pull his socks up due to competition. If dhoni doesnt i wud like to see someone like Shankar at 5 or even Pandey.....

No .6 - has to be a 6th bowling option . Jadhav has done well but team comes 1st and shankar n krunal will provide more utility

If we wanna become a better side apart from no 3 n 7 every place needs an introspect

There is a difference between the need to test most positions  by new guys and that actually happening in the near future.

I was pointing out the realistic possibilities in the near future in that post.

Yup.. For LOIs, it is clearly Pandya

For Tests, it would be good to try Shankar as an all-rounder in Pandya's spot for some home series maybe

Actually Shankar will be very good in places where it swings like England and NZ. Should be tried there.

He will also be a solid no. 6 bat for such conditions.

he should be part of test squad no doubt ahead of hitman atleast. So many other players who deserve to be part of our main squad in odis/t2os not getting chance because prsent policy of selectors and captain. in some years time sarfaraz ,washinton and prithvi shaw will be on fringes forever.need a change in status quo.

Shankar can play both tests and ODIs.

He can build an innings and hit the big shots at the end in ODIs while bowling 6 or 7 overs.

In tests, Shankar is ideal for swing or seam friendly conditions. He is a better batsman than Pandya and his bowling will suit those conditions.

In tests played on flat pitches, Pandya is better.... as he can extract more from a flat pitch by hitting the deck harder and his relatively weaker batting will be easier on flat pitches.
