Kohli is lucky that there is hardly any world class bowler in test cricket right now. During Sachin's times every team had one or two world class bowler from Donald to 2 Ws to all West Indian and Aussie fast bowlers.

Steyn, Philander, Rabada, Johnson, Starc, Hazlewood,, Harris, Cummins, Boult, Broad and Herath are all world class test bowlers,  with low bowling averages, against whom Kohli has scored heavily.... in most cases away from home.

That is true. Even though only Steyn can be called as an ATG among these bowlers...to have 17 off his 20 hundreds against these bowlers is certainly very impressive.

We have to reduce both batting and bowling averages a bit, let's say by 2 for quantification's sake, to make them comparable to the '80s and '90s.

While comparing I would agree the quality of Johnson and Starc would be similar to a bowler averages 2 points lower 20 years back. But that doesn't mean difficulty level for batsman is similar.

I think Rabada and Hazlewood, and maybe even Starc, will go on to become ATGs

 

And Harris and Philander should be called ATGs along with Steyn.

Most right-handed batsmen have found it very difficult to face Johnson and Starc bowling round the wicket .... due to combination of raw pace and some balls coming from blind spot

I will be surprised if Rabada doesn't. Not sure about Hazlewood and Starc. Although Starc will be in ODIs if he isn't already.

Philander will be by the time he finishes. Harris just didn't play enough to be called an ATG.

That's a bit over the top. Kohli may not have the technique of Sachin, but he has been a much more valuable player to the team than SRT ever has. When SRT played, VVS was the MVP of the team. Kohli's determination and fierce attitude is the reason for his success. By the time he is done, I think Kohli would have surpassed Sachin in terms of value to the Indian team. And this is coming from someone who idolized Gavaskar and loved seeing Sachin play. However, when the chips are down Sachin has not delivered compared to his talent.

Kohli still has some distance to cover before he can overtake Sachin. Longevity in performance  is not an easy thing as Alastair Cook is finding out off late. BTW  what a knock from Kohli .!!!!!!!!!!!
