Many teams have been good n have had gr8 bowling attack but its all about mindset ....cricket is about mindset thats why u have many times lesser talented player doing very well

Lot of players have the mindset. You need a game to go with it.

We have to play attacking cricket...both with bat and ball...playing defensive cricket won’t work in South Africa.

India’s best moments in South Africa were moments of aggression and attack.

Sachin-Azhar partnership

Sehwag debut 100

Srinath’s spell in 1996

Sreeshanth’s aggression in 2007 and 2011

Kohli’s knock in 2013

Kapil’s knock in 1992

Our 2 wins in 2006 and 2010 were on the back of some excellent defensive batting.

Just wish all these odi games had come first . Effectively would have given some practice and time to adjust to sa conditions etc

if we not going to have practice games or lots of time to adjust to overseas conditions , then why not have white ball games before test series to allow players to adjust ?

I think it is a tradition in SA to have Boxing Day and New Year's test, had the tour started in Feb-March or late November-early December we would have got the T20s/ODIs first.

I just hope they dont do something stupid like pick both jadeja and ashwin in the playing 11 and use pandya as the 3rd seamer.

If they  lose after playing a proper 11 using pandya as the 4th seamer batting at 7 or pick rohit at number 7 and bench pandya then i can live with that.

Biggest problem with our bowling overseas is the tendency of our bowlers to go wicketless so frequently. If you see successful tours of other countries, they all have bowlers who pick 4-5 wickets once or twice in a series, but most importantly specialist bowlers don't go wicketless.

Even if one bowler has good spells, and other remain wicketless means we provide opposition to get back into the game. We shouldn't expect 5-fers from our spinners, but they should be able to produce spells of 1-35 or 2-70 on consistent basis.

In Johannesberg test last time, Ishant and Zak bowled well in first inning to take 4 wickets each and SA were bowled out of 240. But in 2nd inning, Zak and Ashwin remained completely wicketless. That 1 wicket creates so much difference.

pace bowler becomes deadly after he tastes blood..i mean gets his first wicket, he definitely creates more opportunities or more wickets...specially is its umesh yadav or shammi..if they take one, i kinda am sure that they would get one more.

I am So excited about this series . Goosebumps thinking about it

all foreign trips for me will be the real test....even average batsman can score big runs on indian wickets but the one's who score outside have career's ..lets see who scores well and who does not.

also got to see the cat race among the fast bowlers..stiff competetion going on and few fast bowlers also waiting in the wings as Net bowlers.

Cliche but We can’t take the foot off the gas even when we get the top order  of AB,Amla and Faf out....guys like Morris(if he plays) Dekock and hell even someone like Steyn can play counter attacking knocks that may make the difference.

We have to plan for every single batsman....period!!!

Unfortunately the bowling lacks the requisite skill to execute the plans. It's all fine and well to plan but India will continue to struggle to get the tailenders. Why? Simply due to inferior skill. Cricket is a game of probabilities, and Indian attack has significantly lower probability to get SA out than the SA bowlers. So best possible result on this tour is 0-0 for India.

Reason is non-existent competition in Indian bowling.

Getting the pesky tailenders out quickly  is usually a challenge for us.

When true tailenders come, our pacers should attack the stumps more and use a few more bouncers with a short-leg in place.

True tailenders are usually not good enough to edge the channel deliveries.

This is where Kumble was good in home series as well as in 2004 Aus series. He has those figures of 100-150 runs, but he picked crucial wickets.

In current Ranji final, Delhi bowled poorly today and paid price for it.

This is where I feel Bumrah can be useful for us overseas. I feel he accurate to pick tail enders with stump to stump deliveries and he is one bowler who can consistently give us 1-2 wickets minimum in an inning.

Jadeja is another bowler who can be consistent overseas (except Aus). Our bowlers lose plot when tailenders start slogging. This is either due to inability to trap them LBW consistently or clean them up with yorkers. Both spinners and pacers have been responsible for this.

Shami

Bhuvneswar/Yadav

Bumrah

Jadeja/Ashwin

I feel Ishant is very good third seamer if there is specific plan of bowling short to execute. He can bowl at pace and at the body. Except Shami, none of other pacers are as good as Ishant at this.

I don't know why Indian captains don't go for consistent short ball attack anymore in test cricket when there isn't much help available with pitch. Wagner does it successfully in test cricket. Sure it's difficult to execute as there is high risk of going wrong. If ball is not well directed or it doesn't get up, any decent batsman will hit it for four. Moreover it takes more energy and bowlers can't sustain such spells for long. A bowler employing such tactics has to ideally bowl 4 overs spells. This is where role of a specialist 5 bowlers is needed, a bowler who can provide breaks to pacers without leaking too much runs. But still with all those risks, I feel Indian captains should go for it more often. Place extra fielders to prevent boundaries and ensure that batsmen get away only when  either it is too wide or it's a six. Wasim was one bowler who used to save energy most of the time and crank it up for short bowling when nothing was going for him. Dhoni tried this once with Ishant, but didn't even think about it in 2011.

The continuous-short-ball  tactic can be a very effective ploy if there is no movement and the pitch has good bounce or uneven bounce.

I don't know why we don't try it often enough when nothing is happening or tailenders are batting.

Proper field placement plays a big part.  A short leg, maybe a leg slip, 2 or 3 fielders in the deep fine and square on the leg side.

Shami and Ishant can execute this .... maybe even Bumrah.  Even Saini has the ability, if he gets a chance in the near future.

Batsmen,
need to rotate strike as much as possible, not just leaving deliveries but best way to play any type of bowling is to rotate strike as, bowler has to bowl to different batter all time.
Lower order needs to contribute and put price on their wicket.
Bowler
Faster bowler needs to go for wicket and spinner needs to tighten one end.
