Post WC 2011 : lack of media scrutiny in Indian cricket

I remember following the game in 2000s.

There used to be post match shows where likes of Bedi, Prabhakar etc. used to slam any move of the captain/management which didn't work.

After every loss there were tough questions asked in pc. Ex-cricketers calling out captain on odd selections, his on field tactics etc. was a norm.

 

Post wc 2011 a lot of this has gradually disappeared. Captains can get away with any selection, any illogical on field tactic, loss of any magnitude. There are more articles justifying the odd selections/drops than questioning it. The most shameful part of all this is Indian commies reduced to being cheerleaders for the team. Its so cringeworthy when legends like Gavaskar try to justify bizzare field setting while likes of Holding Chappell call it as it is sitting next to him.

BCCI is now a huge organisation worth probably more than 5000 crores. They have to control the media and it's image. 

 

Is it a surprise that there are less to no criticism of board, selectors, captain?

 

They have promoters defenders to top who are willing to label any critic a jealous person.

May be. After the 2011 WC, from July '11 to Feb'14 the no. 1 test side were whitewashed in England and Australia, lost test series in SA & NZ as well. Let's not even talk about the ODI performance of 2011 WC champs in foreign tours. 

Leave aside a t20 match & an ODI win vs Aus in CB tri series, we lost all matches across all formats in their home. 2 wins in 4 tours against these opponents at their home. Disgusting.

This. I feel media scrutiny is worst during these times with so much penetration (media +social media). Down side of it is PR agencies have got their hands full all the time managing stars. Even Modi is the product of well managed PR. 

So basically the narrative, whether it is brickbats or flowers, is more dependent on how well your PR managers are able to manage. There is no shortage of critics who bash our players in this age, its just how everything is managed and fed to people. 

Board officials & admin, players, sponsors, etc taking any action or not is completely a different story.

As long as IPL is successful, bhaad mein jaaye Indian cricket. You rarely see anyone being criticized in the media.

It is indeed a shame. there are so many questionable decisions made and no one challenges anything. 

 

Only one with some balls was Bedi. Rest just want to be nice so that they can get some money from somewhere.

bedi is very erratic. at least he isn't overly PC, but he says random stuff just for the heck of it.

At times yes but from DDCA days I recall he would call out as he saw it. Some of the stuff was over the top but lot of it was the honest truth too.

I think criticism is there in the form of social media which wasn’t much popular earlier and that has been driving enough. I haven’t watched Indian news channels in last 10 years much but I do remember Bedi and Kirmani on match ka Mujrim on star news back in 2004, the only hindi news channel which we used to get in states. Now something like that might appear once in a while but most of the news reporter are followed a lot on twitter these days and they intentionally spark enough controversy online. 

 

For example the 0-8 had a lot of drama and Dhoni did get a lot of stick from everyone online. I doubt anyone will forget that. 

 

Yesterday I saw this guy Gaurav Kalra mentioning Ashwin needs to come to bowl now, and I tweeted him that this isn’t T20s where he can come and bowl early, it s a test match in south africa where fast bowlers need to use the new ball.  These kind of tweets the viewers and followers see and they unknowingly fall for the reporter’s suggestion and people find a new way to criticize the captain for no reason and no logic.
