He got lucky with no alternative after Dhoni left. He was also helped by the quality of test cricket all around going down. 

 

If I have to give benefit of doubt, most of the selections are Shastri's choices which are just endorsed by the rubber stamp selectors, as they lack stature. But to their credit they have picked very impressive A teams compared to previous decades as I think they get a free hand there with minimal pressure and also Dravid being the coach helps IMO.

+1 KL Rahul is a prime example. He is by the best all format young batsman we have IMO but wasted for more than a year giving stupidly idiotic reasons. Also rahane's growing stature as a test player. 

When it comes to MSD, even he knows he needs MSD so does not touch him at all.
