Pujara and Rahane are both short term options as of now, as was Vijay.  But sooner we find adequate replacements  in the form of exceptional  talents we need to phase out them, especially Pujara. With Rahane at least   his record in 3 out of 4 in SENA is still great.

But his record in last 2 years is a bit off.

There are no exceptional talent waiting.  Even in 2000s, only SRT and Viru were exceptional talents and latter still sucked in SENA averaging 33.

none of two are exceptional talents. Shaw has huge technical flaws.

What are you on about, if none are exceptional talent then you have like huge Tendulkar like expectations can't think of much problem with Gill, Shaw has a flaw but good thing is both realize that they have problem and working on it.

infact  I  pointed to Dravid, Ganguly,Laxman & Sehwag. We have the current version Sachin  in Kohli.

For instance  it is doubt ful whether to call Dravid so much naturally talented, but his  technique & temperament!!!!!!!!! Similarly Ganguly & Laxman  were like duck into water in ENG & AUS respectively. Sehwag  far far better version of Pujara. So  i basically meant to trace out those sort of batsmen. If the system can provide  4 such players  with in a period of 5 years, why can't it do it again??? But.. of course the effort of trial and error needs to keep on continuing  till such players are found .

what does exceptional talent mean?  Tendulkar was exceptional talent.  Viru was exceptional talent.  Shaw could be an exceptional talent but he has those glaring weaknesses which are hard to overlook.  Regarding Gill, will not judge him at this point.  Let him play some FC cricket first, only then we can say whether he is an exceptional talent or not.

Unorthodox technique does not mean technical flaws.  Shaw is not unorthodox.

Shaw has flaws but he admits it and is working on that he himself knows and is working with Dravid on that

BUMP!

Innings: 45
Average: 29.74
Centuries: 1

Rahane should no longer be an automatic selection in the starting XI. It's time to give youngsters a chance now since our "SENA" tours are done.

He hasnt been at his best but has improved in last few mnths and next tour is in WI where he shud play and kohli shud be rested so a youngster like vihari gets his chances

Pujara has also finally come good overseas.....so lets wait on rahane to. He is a quality player . Already Vijay n rahul have lost their places and kohli workload needs to be managed now ....need some exp as well cant have all youngsters

How long is the rope for someone who averages less than 30 for over 2 years? The so called "SENA" specialist was below average in both England and Australia. Nothing needs to be said about his home record.

A youngster can't do any worse than this. He will at least be good on home pitches which Rahane is not!

Yup time to move on to younger and hungrier players who don't already look defeated.

He's had his time in the sun and wilted badly, had more than enough chances and as the difficult overseas tours are now over till the next cycle its the perfect time to try out fresh talent.

In one of the other threads, I mentioned that the least expected of the vice-captain Rahane was atleast 3 50s from 4 tests (~7 innings). Is there a mental block for him batting at 5 ?

No, Kohli should not miss a test series overseas even if against WI,  He can miss ODIs and T20s.

Time to move on and blood gill asap.We visit australia in nov 2020 again for 4 tests,5 test tour of england july 2021,South africa in dec 2021.Gill and shaw should be established by then.We SHOULD NOT carry rahane now  and then face a renewed middle order crisis.

By the way i think future tours programme between dec 2020 to dec 2021 is insane and a blot on bcci planning.
