Enough with hype guys lol He is a decent bat. He is not a slogger. Looks ungainly when he does that. Probably he could play as a ODI batsman in the long run. But how would you compare him with Manish Pandey?

Please no. Shankar has already shown a lot more range than that leg side cow lashing selfish hack

not only ODI but he ll be a gr8 option in test...have been saying for long have him n pandya both and use them acc to condition in test cricket

Shanka is miles ahead in terms of quality then manish pandey

Has quite a bit of trigger movement.Maybe they misfires ,making him  loses his shape every now and then . Pandey stays leg side of the ball whereas he gets in line .also has more power .

also the ball angle of manish pandey's bat , the day it moves he ll be look damn ugly and shankar will give assurance

Manish struggles like rahane against slow bowling, although better then rahane

He looks better with conventional shots than slogs or lofted shots.

Among those who debuted in the last 2-3 years, below is how I would rate them in terms of "potential"

  • T1: Shaw (played in Ind though), Agarwal (looked like he belongs to this level in Aus), Pant (has pacing issues) and Hardik (amazing hitting potential. Could become 2nd most important wkt for Ind in LOIs)
  • T2: Shankar, Gill (Good but some ingredient is still missing atm)
  • T3: Krunal (weakness vs short ball but then even Dhawan has that), Vihari (a glorified nightwatchman)

Pandey is good too in ODIs but he appears to play for his average at times

not only short pitch, krunal doesnt look comfortable against pace only....will have to improve rapidly

Knowing how TN players are known to go off the boil after initial promise i am going to keep the expectations low. They just don't have the drive , determination to succeed.  At this point i would compare his batting with Ashwin who also bats somewhat like a specialist batsman. He has to go to the next level. Only way he can do is significantly increasing his bowling skills.

still in his early days. so let's see how he shapes up and makes use of the opportunities

Shankar is our Angelo Mathews.

Actually Angelo bowls slower than him. But angelo does something with the ball. He seams away or in. So Shankar has to learn to do that instead of bowling gun barrel straight.  Also Angelo is prepared to play longish knocks. In Shankar's defense he never had a chance. But he looks like he has the tools to succeed. Just he has to work twice as hard. This is a brittle middle order. He could own a spot for a while if he puts his mind to it. I am glad Rohit sharma gives him enough confidence by promoting up.

His trigger is fine.  Back foot goes back and across and front foot goes forward and opens up a bit.  Standing still and waiting for ball to be realsed is stuff of 1970s.  Even Dhoni in last year does trigger but of course does it village with simple back and across but does it so vllage like when bowler starts his run up looool meant to do it just when bowler releases or when enters delivery stride

Total modern techinque.  To get in to pwer position, many modern batters use it.  Gill is another one who has same trigger. Rohit uses it as well but his front foot goes to far across sometimes and hence gets done lbw in tests
