He is suitable for playing ball on its merit rather than manufacturing shots against decent balls. Unfortunately he finds himself in such situations and looks silly. 15 in 15. Probably someone else could have made 25? Even i would have preferred KKD. But in a way we are way too lucky that we picked Shankar. Otherwise it would have been a nightmare for us to use Jadhav and Pandya for 20 overs.

Could sense Kohli simmering as Shankar couldn't turn the strike over to him quickly. As a direct comparison, Jadhav (made 9) against same bowlers gets bat on ball everytime for his 8 balls.Sometimes this could mean the difference in a tight game. Just should not be expected to play the role of a finisher. He is a top order bat who can bowl 3-4 overs, if needed. I also wouldn't judge his batting talent based on last game - it was his WC debut and first game against Pak. Nerves would be totally understandable. He looked clueless in the Nidahas cup final, only to do a lot better in NZ. After the WC though, he needs to be slotted into the seaming all rounder position and only played when Pandya is rested. Basically, he became a necessary evil after they found Rayudu sucks ball against pace bowling. It was a case of a series of coincidences. India lacked seaming all-rounder in the absence of Pandya. He was the backup. Rohit Sharma pushed him up the order, to everyone's surprise, he batted with composure and played with more assurance than Rayudu. He did it again in India against Australia. He was looking good when he got run out twice. The only consistent pattern I see is when he is forced to slog he is found wanting. Most of the time selections are made based on what they see in the nets. They can't predict how they will do on the ground. There must be a strong reason why VK was chosen ahead of DK.

Yeah Rayudu & Edulji too created way too many headaches. Rayudu blocking other players for over 50 matches was a farce. I agree Shankar did well in NZ with the bat. But no.4 spot now will be for Pandya/Rahul. Shankar does not inspire much confidence at 6/7.He is ready as an accumulator .But we already have too many of them . figo6762 Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 This forum amazes me .. they guy has played 7 odi games for heavens sake... the almighty Pant hasn’t done a lot either in his ODI appearances ... the guy was picked for reason .... whatever that may be ... who’s going to start an apology thread when saves the team from collapse against Afghanistan . some people in this forum wanted Yuvi ... really after the t20 final ? the guy got good returns : - picked two wickets - good fielder - batting yes he could have performed better ... He did well in australia defending 8 runs in the last over .... he did well in New Zealand in all the games got run out several times yes he had bad home series against Australia so did the entire team .. yes he had a bad Ipl .. but so did Virat.. But Shankar,Jadhav,DK,Jadeja all 4 in the squad together not convincing enough to be in playing XI that too with both Dhawan & Bhuvi injured is hardly comforting .I won't mind Shankar in squad,if Pant & a bowler were in the squad readily available. zen 1

Lol no one cares about Virat's IPL form. Pant is not a specialist batsman. He is a keeper batsman. He is a terrible fielder. If we are going to include a specialist batsman why do we need Pant. We have plethora of talents like Gill, Shaw, Agarwal, Iyer. They can field better as well. Atleast some of them. His game can be a lottery. We don't know what we are going to get. With 4 tailenders India cannot afford to waste space on a one-dimensional player who may or may not click. Let me put out a stat for you. Pant and SHankar have played together in 8 games Shankar 8 matches 5 innings 126 runs 25.20 average 140 strike rate Pant 8 matches 8 innings 155 runs 22.14 average 122.94 strike rate Shankar can bowl, He can field better. Why do you think they will go for Pant instead of Say Iyer or Gill?
vvvslaxman Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 I know it is frustrating to see VIjay Shankar swishing in the air. I have seen the exact same thing from Pant as well. Neither of them can purely qualify as a batsman. It ought to be a specialist if you really want a batsman.
