Hardik Pandya set for long injury lay-off due to lower back injury, which will keep him out for about five months

India's first-choice all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to miss the upcoming T20 International series against Bangladesh since his lower-back injury has resurfaced and may force him out of action for a long period.

According to BCCI sources, Hardik will soon fly to the United Kingdom for an assessment of the injury, which was first sustained during the Asia Cup in Dubai last September.

The Baroda all-rounder is the second key member in the Indian team after premier speedster Jasprit Bumrah, who has been ruled out of the South Africa Test series due to stress fractures in his lower back.

"Hardik is also set to go the United Kingdom to consult the same doctor, who had treated him during the first injury post Asia Cup. He is certainly not playing the Bangladesh series but how long he will be out is still not clear. We will know after he comes back from the United Kingdom," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Germany could be another option for Hardik but BCCI prefers that he consults doctors in the UK.

It is being speculated that Hardik may have to go for a back surgery, which will keep him out for about five months.

"Hardik was left out of Test squad as he didn't fit in the combinations. But then he is not in Baroda's Vijay Hazare team led by Krunal (Pandya). Everyone is keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that he doesn't need to go under the knife. Then he won't be back before the 2020 IPL," the source added.

Pandya will be an integral part of the Indian team during the next year's World T20 in Australia.

In fact, outgoing chairman of selectors MSK Prasad had said that going into the World T20, they are looking to use Hardik more in the white ball format games.

The 25-year-old has scored 532 runs and taken 17 wickets in 11 Tests. In 54 ODIs, he has scored 937 runs and taken 54 wickets. In 40 T20 matches, he has 310 runs and 38 wickets.

Meanwhile, in another development, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Ramesh Powar will be the permanent batting and bowling coaches at the NCA. They will report to NCA Director of Cricket Rahul Dravid and travel with various representative teams (India U-19, A or U-23) as and when required.

During the CoA meeting on Tuesday, it was decided that Haryana Cricket Association (HCA) officials will be asked to meet the committee members along with amended state unit's constitution on Thursday.

Not surprising.  For a guy that skinny, to be bowling constantly at 140k was always going to be strenuous.  That is why ultimately Hardik Pandya's career duration will be determined by how successful he can be as a #5 or #6 batsman.  Said it as much back in 2017.

Pollock was saying in commentary during Ind-Sa t20 series that their is something in his action that is putting a lot of stress on back

Pandya is better than the other available options. that doesn't make him indispensable. Yes he has played some decent cameos. Keyword here is "cameos". Not a single 50 score or 4 wkt haul in the WC. in fact when was the last time he got either of those?

With his injury you need to look out for batsmen/bowlers out there who can do a little bit of the the other skill and have been performing top of the charts. Not get an inferior and watered down bits and pieces player. I have seen this Dubey guy in IPL and few other clips here and there, he won't last more than 2 minutes against quality international bowlers and less said about his bowling the better.

I would play Ishant Sharma or Kuldeep Yadav for their batting ability because they are proven world class bowlers over mediocre players like this.

@Ankit_sharma03 just think logically, bringing in a guy just because he is classified as an "allrounder" with no consistent track record, how unfair it is to guys who are performing in domestics day in and day out. This will set a wrong precedent. Players need to be picked on merit rather than the fact that they are the available option in such a category.

Would rather play someone like Nagarkotti/Mavi. bat themat 8-9 and see if he can constantly improve his batting rather than a yet another bits and pieces filth

It does coz u only play the best option, till u find someone better he is indispensable

he bats at 7....at 7 ull get cameos only n once in a while a big score

he played a dam good knock against aus....a few less runs then 50 doesn't make it less then 50. That innings was the game changer for us

at 7 u dnt expect milestones but impact

Not only batsman n bowler but their are more requirements

lower order batsman which is a specialist job

5th bowler job to give 7-8 overs consistently

I hve my doubts about dubey but unless u try how will u knw. Other decent lower order in India is DK n we shudnt go after him anyways he has no other skill like fielding or bowling. SKY seems another option but again cant bowl

We have to try among what we have....no point dreaming about klusner when u dont have one

Ull play Ishant sharma n kuldeeo at no.7 in ODI.....u knw that they need to do hitting n they both are weak at that , they cant even slog

whom are u talking about dube or pandya ?

nagarkotti need a season to play atleast

n sorry both dont have the batting ability to play at 7......u need a power hitter who can tonk the ball from ball 1

Power hitting is a specialist job in LOI

@maniac- bhuvi, kuldeep played as main bowler they didnt have a 4 wkt haul as well

main bowlers like bumrah n chahal also had only 1- 4 wkt haul in Wc, so to expect from a 5th bowler

That's the kind of logic and justification I find amusing for Pandya. He scores only cameos because he is No.7 and his medicore average for a bowler is justified because he is a fifth bowler. Now that's the problem I have been harping on since the beginning.

When someone can only bat at 7 and only be the 5th bowler that is the definition of bits and pieces.

So after Bumrah, Pandya also going to UK for an advice on a back injury which looks like a stress fracture. In hindsight, could we not have rested both of them for 2-3 months after the WC. Was their injury status known to the TM and did it risk them despite that knowledge (they have done this to many players in the past)

who scores 100 at 7 ? wo bhi bata do mujhe , u put stokes at 7 he ll also have similar record - oh btw stokes avg 26 at no.7

pandya bowling avg in odi - 34

stokes - 41 (isnt that a problem then)

thats facts which u cant find answer to coz of ur huge impossible expectation

a pretty shitty n old school word , which is used by ppl who have no understanding of modern day cricket

Hardik plays as specialist lower order hitter.......old school mindset will never acknowledge that power hitting is a specialist job in LOI, can only look at batting n bowling.

So hardik is not bits n pieces.....he is a specialist Lower order hitter n no one in whole India comes even close to him

Stokes despite averaging 41 as a bowler is still considered a world class allrounder where as Pandya is a utility player you know why?

Stokes is a match winning batsman and the fact that he can bowl at 140ks and take the odd wicket and on his day can be more than handy with the ball makes him a "proper allrounder". That;s the actual definition of an allrounder. not a bits and pieces player. ARe you kidding me calling a guy who just won his team the WC final and followed it up with one of the ATG test knocks and comparing him with Pandya? You have commited a sin during the auspicious season of Dussera even comparing the 2. I suggest please visit the temple today.

BTW if STokes was batting at 7, he would be a bits and pieces player too which clearly he is not.

Coz stokes has more body of work as he has played more

Pandya is not utilty in LOI....he is a specialist

similar example who remeber rohit n yuvraj singh struggle when they are used as example they are being told as legend

Pandya is a match winner with a bat no one can deny that, only diff is stokes bats at 5

Pandya pace is high as stokes

only diff between both is stokes has played more hence more evolved

again pandya is a specialist in LOI not bits n pieces

yes n these 2 achievements came after playing double no of odi then pandya

n 5 times more test

If u compare them at similar points

After 11 test

Pandya

batting - 31

bowling- 31

Stokes

batting - 34.14

bowling- 41.14

Hardik ahead in bowling, stokes lil ahead in bowling

After 54 odi

Pandya

Batting - 29.90

Bowling - 40

Stokes

Batting- 29.51

Bowling- 37.19

Clearly nothing seprates them in Batting, only diff is stokes batted higher yet poor record , bowling stokes is a lil ahead

I suggest u visit a stat side and learn analysis , coz u need a comman point while comparison. U can compare a body of work of 50 matches vs 100 ...rather see where both stood at 50 games

clearly then u lack knowledge about the role of power hitter which is specialist

batting at 7 doesnt make u bits n pieces.....what are u watching

Is it end of his career for Hardik.

He had that fatal back issue that day.post surgery only very few players can be successful.

I think his international cricket days could be over.

I hope I am wrong on this.

He is ultra precious for India.
