Who should be our #6 in ODI cricket going forward?

1. Rohit Sharma

2. Shikhar Dhawan

3. Virat Kohli (C)

4. Shreyas Iyer

5. Rishabh Pant (WK)

6. ?
7. Hardik Pandya

I believe our first choice top 7 batting in ODIs is what I have posted above. But who should be our #6 going forward? We recently played Kedar Jadhav in the WI series but he really doesn’t deserve a spot in the team anymore. He should also get dropped and kicked out just like Dhoni and Karthik.

I think one option can be is to make Hardik bat at #6 and include Jadeja at #7. I feel that Pandya can be a match winner with the bat if he gets to bat up the order. Or we can maybe select a debutant like Shivam Dubey and have him bat at #6. He averages 43 with a strike rate of 121 in List A cricket, so he wouldn’t be a bad option at all!

That would make the most sense. Hardik is a batting allrounder and has a good technique and can destroy death bowling. Can take over from Dhoni. Can also bowl a bit under seamer friendly conditions. Jaddu is a better bowler who had improved his batting off late. Both are good fielders thats a bonus.

jadeja bats better when he has time....at 7 u hve no time which is why he failed there for years. In Semi final also he came in with 20 overs left....ill play jadeja at 6 which sadly wud mean pandya stays at 7

Hardik at 6 and Jadeja at 7 means we can play ...

... 3 specialist  pacers + 2 specialist spinners + Hardik.       or

... 2 specialist pacers + Kul-Cha + Jadeja + Hardik.

This will give us many options.

And we can choose 4 best ODI bowlers from 8 to 11.

But I am tempted to try Dube in ODIs too.

Keeping in mind next WC is India jadeja can be a huge factor specially if his batting clicks ....even if it doesnt on our pitches he is good enough to play as bowler specially towards 2nd half of tournament when pitches start to wear out.

S Dube is a good option. He has had only 1 inning in T20 need to give him a chance. It would have been better if he made debut in ODI format first.

He has good first class record.

Out of the seam bowling all rounders tried he may be the one who can hit sixes at will which is required at the moment. Also do it consistently.

Hardik Pandya is more hype than substance, has not done anything substantial since his debut. He has had a few cameos nothing much. Also in the news for wrong reasons, not a ideal role model for children to look up to.

They can play whoever they want. It doesn't matter now. World cup is 4 years away. I just hope they pick the right one when 2023 comes.

I am not confident about Pant batting at 5. either he must open or he must come in at 6. if he comes in at 6, with about 15 overs left, he can play it like an IPL game (which will give him clarity).

However, if I assume the above order for the sake of argument, I would want a batting AR at 6. jaddu's test batting has been drastically improved and he is one contender. not sure how dube might perform.

We have to find someone who can fit this puzzle .....more then individual. Rohit, kohli, pandya are pretty much locked. Iyer has time to become certain and same is the case with pant although he is ahead of his compeition like of kishen, samson. High chance Dhawan wnt last till 2023 but even his replacements like shaw, mayank, rahul , gill doesnt bowl.

So No.6 also shud be able to bowl . Now the options that can bowl

  1. Jadeja- best option but has his batting really come thorugh or was it just another once in blue moon innings remains to be seen.
  2. Dubey- ok for a 6th bowler . Batting remains to be seen
  3. Axar- shud keep performing and most importantly have impactful season of IPL
  4. Krunal- batting is weak against fast bowling, bowling is good for t20 but in ODI he is behind axar n jadeja as bowler. Not an option for ODI as of now
  5. Shankar- 6 is not the right slot for his batting and his bowling wnt be of much help in 2023 wc in India. His battings is more suited    for 4-5 slot.

My  choice for No 6 would be

Shivam Dube

Nitish Rana

Surya Kumar Yadav

Nitish Rana? Not sure on him.. maybe for his off spinning option he provides.. but as far his batting goes.. he has serious issues with short pitch bowling..he can bash spinners for good.. however his batting against extreme pace doesn't evoke much confidence..

Shivam dube, if he makes full use of chances given in t20i then his entry into the odi team will be pretty much imminent.. however he needs to perform.

SKY also provides a good choice.. needs to keep scoring runs in domestic.. to even break into india A team.. he is far lower in pecking order for now...

Jadeja at No.6 and Hardik at No.7  gives us two players who can give us 10 overs if needed make a 50 plus score at a good rate.

They give us spin and fast bowling all round options and we should play them both. Also both are fit and field well.

This also gives up freedom to select 3 fast bowlers  and that additional quality spinner. Or even two spinners and two fast bowlers.

I sometimes feel we can mix match our No.5 to No.7 and keep the top 4 consistent.  The team management  should know we have found our No.4 and let Iyer settle.

KL Rahul and Gill can be our backups  for top 3 slots... If this Dubey can click they might pull him as middle order backup.

Definitely  kadar yadav experimentation should end and Manish pandey disturbs the balance.. Karthik should stop being in the loop as well.

Good post . Almost the same i have in my mind.   I would add  Shaw  among openers , and Mayank  for MO  options.

Of all domestic players currently playing.. Mayank Agarwal looks the most ready nd strong to deserve a place in India's limited over teams (t20i nd ODI both)..

dhawan should not be anywhere near the Indian t20i team.. include Mayank instead of him.. or even give sanju samson a chance at opening..

In ODI cricket.. dhawan has good record.. but certainly he is not getting any better.. include Mayank instead of kl Rahul as back up opener..

For no 6 try dube, SKY.. see how it goes.. if even one of them succeeds it will be an quite an upgrade from midget jadhav or dhoni..
