RANJI TROPHY 2019-20

JK might make the semis now, they seem to be a good side tbh. Fair play to them.

Odisha on the other hand got the perfect conditions for their bowling and batting innings yet fell way behind Bengal. There are much better sides than them. Likes of Mumbai, Baroda, Vidarbha, UP, TN, Delhi would blow them away. Infact Maharashtra hammered them in the group stage so that tells you about their credentials.

J&k being a low ranked team got to play QFs in Jammu and lost 2 good days to rain  Now they will go Semis, what a farce!

According to BCCI rules, the team that last played away will be playing at home the next match. J&K played Karnataka away in 2016 or 17 and so now it was their turn to be the host. Why would any team give up the home advantage in a quarter final?

They bowled Karnataka out for 206 and are at 88/2 with 2 full days to go. They have dominated so far. J&K, if at all they move to semis, will be due to their performance

That J&K Vs Karnataka game would have been such fun to watch. J&K had the lead for the taking, but the experience showed.

This write-up on the Ranji blog on Cricinfo is beautiful

Is Jammu & Kashmir's semi-final dream over?

Shashank: He sat motionless in the dressing room. Staring straight through his disconsolate team-mates who were trying to console him. Abdul Samad, 16, had just got out looking to slog sweep. The ease with which he was using his feet to step out and drive forced J Suchith to switch back to over the wicket. Just two overs earlier, Aquib Nabi had reverse swept Suchith through point. Jammu & Kashmir smelt the lead, they were just 14 runs behind. And then he slogged.

Suchith held his length back a touch, got the ball to dip and turn sharply from outside leg. Samad went for it, only managing to top-edge it a mile. Suchith trembled for a brief second, ran back, took two steps forward. It went that high. There was so much time, and he was literally on his knees by the time the ball descended. But he held on to it superbly in the end. J&K last the final two wickets - to Prasidh Krishna - at the same score and conceded the lead.

A collective cry of anguish from 1000 fans, who wildly cheered for every run, every boundary, told you a story. You got the sense that this was the moment when their season truly slipped out of their hand. Karnataka players fist pumped, roared, high-fived, ruffled hairs and exulted in jubilation. They’d just escaped by the skin of their teeth, a jailbreak of sorts with the season hanging in tatters. Sure, a lead by no means a guarantee of victory, but so much time had been lost and so much emotion poured in by both teams that you felt this was the game right here. Whichever team conceded a lead was in danger of just falling flat, not because their ability was in question, but because they’d poured everything they had.

The adrenaline was pumping right from the first ball today. Not just for the set of 22 players and coaches, but for the fans too. The scorers, generally happy to help out travelling journalists with a power socket or two, share wifi passwords, suddenly went quiet. The catering staff lined up outside their tents to watch. The policemen on duty, often looking away, trying to catch a glance every now and then. It was that kind of a morning.

Heart breaking stuff this!

At 107-2 it looked like J&K had put one foot in the semis but a collapse has ensured that our dream run is about to end.It was fun while it lasted. This has been a terrific effort from the whole team.

Hoping against hope that something miraculous happens tomorrow.Another quick fire century from Samad would do just good.

Group C and D should not be playing QF at all. They are all weaker teams playing each other.  We should have two separate elite and plate groups. Only elite group should playing for the trophy. Plate to qualify for elite group.

+1.. Folly of having 4 mismatched teams in QF shows. Most probably it will be Bengal , Saurashtra,Gujarat and Karnataka in semis.

And once again Karnataka find their way when their backs were to the wall. Watch out for Siddharth. He seems to perform well under pressure

Hard luck man though it's not over yet, a collapse tomorrow from Karanataka could yet happen. It's the only qf match which has been some sort of a contest. Hope it goes all the way.

On the other Goa have been absolutely anhilated, Odisha and Andhra almost battered to submission. These are poor teams clearly.

Gujarat were on their way to being hammered by Bengal in the group stages, before bad light and rain saved them. And then Gujarat topped the group *facepalm* ... such things happen in long group stages, so relax!

Odisha knew what they had to in order to make it to the QF stage, and they did - they deserve to be there ahead of the likes of Jharkhand and Maharashtra; no amount of crying over spilt milk will change that. This would have been true even if Odisha lost by more than an innings and 300 runs (which is precisely what happened when Hyderabad, they of the mighty Elite Groups A&B, played against Bengal in the Group stages). As it turned out, Odisha gave Bengal a serious scare in both of the first two innings, before Bengal's overall quality and experience came through. No matter which way you spin it, they were worthy quarterfinalists.

TL;DR: Yes, Bengal won the Rosogolla derby (comfortably in the end), but Odisha put up a creditable fight.

And before anyone still thinks it is a good idea to slag off my Rosogolla brothers - please remember that Odisha has always been there or thereabouts in First Class cricket. When East Zone won the Duleep Trophy in 2012, yes Ashok Dinda and Mohammad Shami were essential in blowing opposition batting line-ups away, and the likes of Wriddhiman Saha, Anustup Majumdar, etc. scored important hundreds, but do not forget that the likes of Natraj Behera, Biplab Samantray and Basant Mohanty were right up there, pulling their weight.

TL;DR: Rosogollas together strong!
