Having heard his interviews he personally feels he had a couple of years left in him. Don't think a guy who quits at his peak feels that way. I agree that there was pressure on Ganguly to retire or he could have dragged it too
Global.Baba Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Also people who say it is well within Dhoni's rights to retire when he please and it is not the public's problem should realize that it is public's emotional investment and their passion for cricket to watch it on TV or subscription medium or even follow it online is what made this guy a millionaire. So yes if Public has invested so much in his career they have the right to know. In a way glad that selectors and BCCI have seen through this bs. One day after not getting the central contract, he was forced to go to a temple and then come back to net practice. What an embarrassment. Another legend who has over stayed his welcome. I bet we will see this with Kohli and Rohit as well. diehardpacer and raki05 2

I think Sachin retired from tests and T20's(which he unofficially retired in 2007) at the right time but should have quit ODI's after 2011. Others come to mind are Ravi Shastri who retired at 30 and Srikkanth who despite having flashes here and there in 92, was basically done as he lost his eyesight. Gavaskar retired at right time, Tendulakar very late , too late.
Jimmy Cliff Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Gavaskar had a great final innings but had below par numbers in 3 of his last 4 years. He averaged 28.87 in 1984, 39.50 in 1985 and 42.85 in 1987. Vijy and raki05 2

More topics to discuss .... though if BCCI had planned well, they could have designed a schedule like below unless there is a revival in form : 2019 Dhoni 2021 Dhawan 2023 Rohit 2025 Kohli There are bowlers like Shami (real age?), Bhuvi (pace will decline further), etc., whose replacements need to be considered in the coming years Global.Baba 1
Cricwala Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Sunny, Ganguly (his dropping in 05/06 was one of the greatest & bravest selectoral decisions in my books, as it charged him up to return with a bang for final 2 yrs), dravid, Kumble, srinath, vvs all went at right time. Others like Sehwag, vengsarkar, srikkanth, gambhir, nehra, zaheer, agarkar who were dropped due to poor form and either kept fighting in domestic or faded away without bitterness or sense of entitlement also went out the right way. Ones who overstayed their welcome in selfish pursuit of records - kapil, Tendulkar...both by around 1 year. But worst is the man who has not just overstayed his sell by date by 3 years, but cynically manipulated and used his clout to extend career for commercial interests arguably costing country ICC trophies - MS DHONI raki05 and sergio04 2

Cricwala Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Dhoni has dealt a massive blow to our our cricketing culture, which had been made more professional, outcome oriented and less star-centric by previous generation of Ganguly-Dravid-Sachin-Kumble-VVS-Sehwag....MSD and Srinivasan brought back virus of star power, apathy towards overseas routs, and it all culminated in IPL match-fixing saga something our cricket administration is yet to recover from. Kohli is Dhoni's protege and has taken the same arrogant, autocratic culture forward, albeit he atleast wants to win. Now it will need all strong voices from pre-Dhoni generation to force a course correction and ensure that post-Kohli the game again regains primacy over any individual raki05 1

May be from tests but with most sc cricketers wc seems retirement season I remember waugh (was forced) retiring before 2003 WC and Richards before the 92 wc.

Autonomous Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Good to know that Indian Cricketers retire. We have grandpa's like Hafeez, Malik, K. Akmal etc. staking claims at selection.
SUMO Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 In ODIs form never drops, I have seen its easier to still average 45 in odis for great batsman well in their late 30s. Its the tests where perfomance dips to the zenith all of a sudden around mid 30s. Virat can play till 2027 WC he will be 38 by then. Wont be surprised if shikhar retains his present form till 2023. Only shaw is a threat to his place, not bcz shikhar is any bad but shaw seems a freak talent. Otherwise dont see rahul or mayank or gill impactful/consistent enough to challenge inform experienced shikhar.
mani sha Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 Dravid - one bad series in England and he retired . Correct decision kumble - retired while bowling well . Legends both Kiran more - played well and retired well . vengsrakar and Gavaskar - timed out right srinath , prasad - both Bowed out correct . Played hard . Didn’t like the fact he didn’t announce his retirement ashwin - should retire from odi .. he is not odi material now Frustrated and express bowling 2
