The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) warned that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed by Narendra Modi’s administration late last year, represented “a significant downward turn in religious freedom in India”. The criticism was published in a rare standalone “factsheet” produced by the bipartisan panel, which is independent of the White House but advises the president and the State Department on foreign affairs. The concerns expressed by the US panel follow similar comments from the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres, who said on Wednesday that CAA brought “a risk of statelessness” for India’s Muslim community. USCIRF framed the citizenship changes as coming “in the context of the growing prominence of the BJP’s Hindutva ideology… [which] views India as a Hindu state and Islam as a foreign and invading religion”. Ahead of Mr Trump’s visit, similar concerns were conveyed to the Indian government by US Congressmen Ami Bera and George Holding, who met with Modi’s foreign secretary Harsh Shringla on Wednesday.

Several reputed agencies and institutions from the US as well as people in authority in their Government also consider Pakistan as a terrorism infested, poverty stricken, 7th century aspiring sh!thole I sincerely hope you use the similar logic in that case too instead of changing goalposts and crying victim.

In general, the "middle America" of which you speak does not like you. To them, you - the white-collar, non-Christian uppity-up who wears saffron and eats chilli peppers - are a threat. When Trump ridicules minorities from what he calls "$hit-holes," he includes you. On the other hand, the Dems don't like you either because vocal Muslim groups don't like the country you came from and the Dems cannot appear anti-Muslim. Either way, the desi-Dempub is screwed.

I constantly made a point during the Obama-years and in 2016 that middle America (esp the South where I live) is not a dumb, racist $hithole. But at that time, the common desi sentiment was that rural white America was a huge threat to them, labeled all of them racist, and I was labeled a Trumper! But now Trump has identified a common foe - Islam - and is courting our man Modi. Hence, white America is seen as the lesser evil, and red is saffron's new friend! Classic tribalism.

My vote changed not because of HowdyModi , even before when economy and jobs were good as well as less taxes with increased wages. Under Hillary or now with Bernie, both India and me would have been screwed. All I need is to tolerate Trumpisms for my benefit. I couldn’t stand anybody in the last Dem debate with their working class talking points except Bloomberg maybe.
