IPL 2020 has been deferred until April 15 following the global concern over the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) outbreak. "The BCCI will work closely with the Government of India along with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and all other relevant Central and State Government departments in this regard."

 

The IPL now joins a host of high-profile sporting events including the UEFA Champions League, the NBA and the ATP Tour to be affected by COVID-19 (novel coronavirus), a respiratory illness that was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organistion (WHO) this week.

 

With the outbreak rapidly escalating across the globe the Indian government has placed severe travel restrictions for people traveling in as well out of India. With the coronavirus being highly contagious and spread through contact, the government said sporting organisations would need to adhere to Health Ministry's guidelines to avoid mass gatherings.

 

ESPNcricinfo had earlier reported the possibility of the IPL being a severely restricted tournament - with at least some part of it being played to empty stands - because of the pandemic. While the central sports ministry had said it would not stop sporting events from taking place as long as they adhered strictly to government guidelines discouraging mass gatherings, the external affairs (foreign) ministry had said that its advice was to not go ahead with the tournament at this time, but left the decision to the organisers.

There is also no evidence that it will not. Being a flu virus, it is more likely to die in summer than otherwise.

That's not how it works. Till we know for sure this strain is affected by heat, the government will take maximum precautions

My sister and her family were going to come down to India next week and we planned to watch an IPL game together. They had to cancel their trip.

Its times Like this that indoorsy people like me feel smug and unaffected.  good time to Netflix and chill or torrent and chill, whatever floats your boat. though these sports events are a big part of my pastime and this is coming just as Man united had started playing well.

The IPL should be shutdown for 2020.

Oh dear do you live in panicstan or what. Crawl underneath your bed with hazmat suit on and don't touch anything or eat anything. You will be fine. There is this risk of death due to starvation but otherwise you will be fine from coronavirus

We are all chetwiyas of the highest order moaning about IPL,  emergencies, solutions, pandemics.

 

Just get Shastri sober enough to understand that there's a free unlimited lifetime supply of Corona everywhere in the world, and no one else wants it, pancho!

 

Problem solved, IPL can start tomorrow, day after at the latest as Shastri may have to rearrange his bar a bit.  Jaan loge bachey ki?
