Looking back, Vijay Shankar wasn’t that bad.

I got the highlights of the  Ind vs Aus game Where Shankar took those 2 wickets to win the game as a recommendation on my YouTube feed.

 

Then while watching that I saw the Ind vs Pak WC 2019 match in the related videos and went on a little YouTube rabbit hole journey.

 

In the Ind vs Pak match, Shankar scored some run a ball 14, He took a catch and when Bhuvi was injured came in and gave India a crucial breakthrough in his first over. In fact he got through a lot of overs in the game exceeding expectations.

 

Then I think about the innings he played in Nzl with Rayudu and then the innings that put him in the WC team which he played alongside Kohli against Australia.

 

Add to that he had a couple of other good cameos in Nzl T20.

 

The reason why he is so infamous on here is his innings in the Nidihaas final, but even in the Nidihaas trophy he was the 3rd seamer and did alright here and there.

 

Over all he didn’t perform too shabbily, he is still young, so he can be kept in the scheme of things.

 

I would say he is way better than Dube as a cricketer. That’s not a difficult accomplishment TBH but he is a decent reserve to have in your scheme of things.

Shankar has to be in the scheme of things for our tour to England. I always felt his batting had a higher ceiling in red ball cricket, the kind of conditions we have been seeing in Eng in recent years even his bowling would be useful. Our own Collingwood.....we must do something different for our tour to Eng next year. Shankar comes in for Rahane in my team.

He is quite a good talent, team confused him for pandya like for like replacement which was wrong. Shankar is a solid bat who is best at 4 n 5 position but below that is not his game and neither is t20 cricket. He is max a 3-4 over bowler and pandya is 8-10. He still shud be a among the options for 4-5 but now the problem is he is competing with guys like iyer, KL, pant, gill. If he has to aim for that no.6 spot he has to work on his power game which is where someone like dube got ahead. 

Have been saying for long that he shud be part of test side as he is good enough to play as batsman and he ll be very handy as bowler in england n NZ . He avg 49 in Fc cricket

 

This is one of his innings from India-A tour of NZ, looks such a solid bat against pace bounce. Pitches here look to have good pace n bounce and bowling is also high quality 

 

 

Tm Shud understand every youngster strength and weakness n use him correctly. Shankar isnt meant for pandya role in LOI , Dube is also a wrong comparison to shankar. 

 

Add to that shankar is a very good fielder

Batted like a sheep in the matches against WI, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the wc and the warmup game as well. Doesnt look mentally ready compared to the likes of Iyer and Pandey who have overtaken him for the 4-5 batting slot in ODI's. Have not seen enough to comment if he can do it in Test cricket.

Did you actually read my post and understand the context or you just came Up with a statement because you already pre determined what you wanted to say?

Afghan and WI were failures. While against Pak he didn’t set the stadium on fire but he was more than useful in that game. 
 

He came in around rain breaks and it’s not easy for a batsman to start hitting out especially against a decent bowling attack like Pak who are  especially decent with the older ball.  I don’t think even Pandya was hitting too many boundaries and Dhoni as usual played an iconic 1 when it mattered.

 

He filled in for Bhuvi and got through his overs. Remember Bumrah was a little off color in the game. It was the spinners and Pandya/Shankar who put breaks. He is more than a decent fielder.

 

As I said in the OP, he did show flashes of his ability at times.

 

I am not saying Shankar is a potential ATG and needs to be in the X1 but at the same time he isn’t totally useless. He should not be totally forgotten and should be in the backups.

Yeah. He should be playing the ODIs as a floater.  Looked a proper solid bat in whatever little chances he got. Much more compact than the fluke jadeja.

Shankar is much more solid then many of our batsman but if he aims for Jadeja spot for next Wc he ll loose the battle coz of his bowling. 

Next Wc is in India and in every Wc pitches start to turn in 2nd half even in IPL to and when pitches turn someone like jadeja, axar becomes extremely dangerous

Jadeja should never play in the top 7 of any ODI team. He's at best a bowling all rounder at no.8. 

 

Shankar is a proper solid bat. He'll compete with Kedar Jadhav's spot at no.6.

If anything jadhav career shud be over now and another problem shankar faces is his batting is more suited for 4-5 slot which is filled currently and for 6,7 his power game isnt that strong. Jadhav had an upper hand in that dept over him.

Shankar isn’t that bad of a player but it was disgusting to see him get selected over genuine specialist batsmen like Iyer, Gill or even Rayudu in the World Cup squad. 

 

Had Pandya not went on Karan Johar’s TV show at that time, then Shankar would never had gotten a chance to play for Team India!

For this reason i really wanted to see abdul samad this ipl...he looks to fit most criterias only needs to be checked against international pace attacks even though he smashes varun aron who is quick but still needs to see how he bats against the skillfull quicks.

He is genuine batsman himself, he is a batsman who can bowl but not an all rounder. 

Koffee with karan alone didnt help, he was our best batsman on NZ A tour which included all these names - gill iyer mayank .

Fine, then here is my reasoning why i dont agree with you. Nidahas happened before nz tour so there were no baggage's from that final. At international level his bowling isnt going to come handy was clear in the little opportunities he got. Pak is a sh-it batting side chasing score which was out of their reach from ball 1. Jogi bhai became hero thanks to one over,  binny has unbelievable best figures in ODI, shankar too had one good last over in ODIs. 

Lets not talk about dubey cause shankar is better in every sense. 

Bottom line if pandya is in team there is no place for shankar.
