that one knock in 2011 carries lots and lots of weightage. Also Dhoni was instrumental in India winning  the first ever bilateral ODI series in Pakistan & AUS respectively. His  tournament final blast vs SL in Windies ( 15 off 5 balls in last over)  too comes into mind.

Lol.  Dude yuvi was much more clutch for india than dhoni and gilly was on another level. The dude has a 149 in a WC Final.

 

i asked if Dhoni scored in any important matches apart from the two I listed, and you’re quoting me bilateral wins.

And T20s although maybe KL Rahul can replace him. Dhoni in T20s is such a low bar that with a couple of good years, anyone could replace him.

There are many options for opening roles in ODIs, not many for no 5 role that too with gloves and captaincy. 

 

Dhoni is luxury in ODIs.

Maybe in ODIs you can have an argument but this is overall no? Gilly easily. Much superior test batsman and even in T20s I am sure he wouldn't have been as rubbish as MS. MS had that WC final knock, Gilly had 50s in 1999 and 2003 finals and that brutal 100 in 2007 F. As a keeper Gilly is more rounded. Sorry it is a stomp.

Karthik is already a better T20 player than any version of MS.

Test - Gilly by some distance.

 

T20 - Equal. But Dhoni won more club events as captain.  

 

Captain - Dhoni by landslide.

 

Overall Dhoni>Gilly by a whisker. Probably they are near level of competence possible for keeper bats ( actual odi and test  wicket keepers not batsmen that can keep) can be. May be we wont see many now..

Dhoni prime level of value in Odi was full keeper cap and linchpin no 5 finisher, comparable to kallis prime in test of bulwark top bat, first change pacer in value. Yuvi did gun mid fielder wicket taking spinner and middle order enforcer in 2011 wc. Not many such examples around. Dhoni is legendary in odi no doubt.

Interesting. Gilchrist played about 65-70% of his test matches against India. in Australia. And just 7 tests in India. His average against India in Tests is 28, which is 20 less than his overall average. It is also the lowest average he has against any test playing nations. 

Looks like those inconsistent poor bowlers did something right against Gilchrist.

yes, It was a decent attack, but in no era could Srinath and Prasad be called poor bowlers.

Gilly has the rubber ball in glove knock.. But Dhoni is greater in Odi. Gilly is greater in test. Its anyones guess how much greater they were of each other in their dominant format.

So what does that have to do with my point. I was just responding to the OP saying dhoni was more clutch than Dhoni.  As far as I am concerned, apart from 2007 T20 SF, and  2011 Final, I don’t think dhoni ever delivered in big spots. I’m mainly talking T20 World Cups, 50 over world cups and CT.
