Lord Posted August 19, 2025 Posted August 19, 2025 Tehran is good but shot in dark gloomy colour grading. Which is off putting

Which is off putting Yeah, that's one thing I hate about about Hollywood. And we are borrowing from it. There's another irritating things- whispering. Especially, but not limited to in horror and suspense movies. Watched at least 50 good movies which I couldn't enjoy because I didn't hear many of the dialogues properly. Nowadays, I go through the entire movie first to check if does not contain whispering. Seriously. Edited August 20, 2025 by Chakdephatte Lord, nevada, New guy and 1 other 2 2
Chakdephatte Posted August 20, 2025 Posted August 20, 2025 I am sure there's a reason and history behind this dark film making thing and @zen is aware of it.
Tillu Posted August 21, 2025 Posted August 21, 2025 (edited) Sholay completed 50 years 1 week back. It reminds me of this great Short film by Google, acted phenomenally well by the Marathi theatre artist Nandu Madhav and Vicky Kaushal. For the people who do not understand Hindi, enable the sub titles. Edited August 21, 2025 by Tillu New guy 1

To a large extent, It has to do with artistic choices. Earlier shooting on film meant that the margin for error was less so filmmakers relied on shooting with more light. It was difficult to view the footage in real time. With the wide spread use and improved quality of digital cameras, filmmakers are able to experiment and pursue the look that they want. Modern cameras capture light relatively better. The post processing is done on high end monitors that give filmmakers the exact info that they are looking for to grade the film per their artistic choice. Many films graded on these high quality monitors are designed to be viewed with minimum lighting like in the theatres. Filmmakers are also experimenting with infrared cameras to merge that footage with regular footage to create new looks. Some films can push the “darkness” envelope too far like in certain sequences in the Batman (2022). The issue is in how the content graded on high end equipment and designed to be viewed in certain lighting conditions gets viewed by regular viewers on their equipments and maybe in unoptimized lighting conditions for the content. I haven’t watched Tehran so can’t comment on it so the above is a general take. Edited August 21, 2025 by zen diga, Chakdephatte and Tillu 1 2
vvvslaxman Posted August 21, 2025 Posted August 21, 2025 I saw this Roman polanski movie Death and the Maiden. It is a fictional thriller. Entire movie happens in one place. Just 3 characters.
Chakdephatte Posted August 21, 2025 Posted August 21, 2025 Since we are at Roman Polanski, let's talk about Macbeth. I have watched two of its adaptations- Macbeth by Polanski and Maqbool, I liked it a little more because of how it adopted to the modern setting. Which is your favorite adaptation? I would love to know about more

I have not seen any of this Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood for a powerful cinematic take, Roman Polanski's Macbeth (1971) for a visceral and largely faithful version, Justin Kurzel's Macbeth (2015) for stunning visuals and intense performances, and Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) for its stylish and unique black-and-white aesthetic with a focus on the Macbeths' relationship.

Yea.. that guy has been hiding from US authorities since then. I think it happened in Jack NIcholson house. In movie industry it goes far deeper. Until recent me too movement it was all too prevalent. Just that some got caught. Some didn't. Woody Allen married his own step daughter. coffee_rules 1

I don't think Brahmastra 2 is happening anymore. It's very difficult for Bollywood to make big budget blockbusters like South because South audience doesn't watch Hindi movies like Hindi audience watch South movies. A rubbish movie like Pushpa 2 Hindi dubbed got 67 cr opening biggest opening in Hindi belt. KGF2 did 53 cr. While war 2 is no way worse than these two films. Even the best Bollywood film won't get similar collection from South India. Jawan the highest bollywood collection day one film got merely 9.5 cr from South India. Despite that it was directed by a south director, lead actress was also a famous south Indian actress. That's why bollywood movies are struggling to become pan India. War 2 telugu OTT rights are sold at 90 cr, Hindi will probably be 150 cr. 240 cr revenue there for them. They would have sold even before the film was released. PS: it's 250 cr to Netflix. So that means max movie can make is around 600cr in total which is still barely break even. All the year or more of shooting and all the effort spent to barely break even cannot be worth it.

No hindi film dubbed in Telugu, tamil, malyalam, kannada combined can do even half of that. But these days theatrical isn't the only thing. Like war 2 had made 325 cr even before it's release. So producer probably didn't lose money though it's not the case with every big budget film. Hindi belt still has lot of potential. They aren't even utilizing 25% of it. SI movies did the right thing by dubbing the movies in Hindi and sold the satellite TV rights at throwaway prices which got the North Indian audience familiar with our actors. Bollywood makes zero efforts to profit from the SI market but makes all kinds of efforts to reach the P@ki audience all for a pocket change. I don't even see English subtitles for most of the Bollywood movie trailers on YouTube. coffee_rules 1

Hindi speakers are 70 crores as per 2011. Bollywood does not need south indian markets at all. They can rely on indian hindi market. Add NRI crowd and the islamic market for Khan's. If they get the act right, they can deliver 5 1000cr movies in a year. But they are struggling badly as they are unable to appeal to tier 2/tier 3 town audience. South is not homogenous. It is 4 languages with very different audience tastes. The only similar audience are telugu. For the population size, we give decently good collections. Animal got 50 crores, Jawan 75 crores and War 2 got around 62 crores. War 2 is different from Pushpa 2. It is a spy thriller aimed at urban market. It took a good opening of 23 crores in telugu lands. In hindi belt it is 29 crores. Atleast telugus gave it a good push. But bad content made sure that it crashed. Pushpa 2 is aimed at Majdoor's and auto drivers. Different crowd. You and me calling it cringe has no meaning. We are not the market.
