remember we are talking about playing Pandya as a pure batsman who will not bowl even 1 over.

I understand your point here. But more often Indian team will be at 210-4 or 220-4 after 40 overs rather than 80-4 or 120-4 after 25-30 overs.

Hence, more often we will need a hitter like Pandya in final 10 to give us 80-90 runs rather than Manish Pandey who can give us mostly 65-70 runs only.

Pandey has a 100 vs Aus in Aus chasing a 330+ Score.

Pandya was also bowling in that Aus series which he isn’t any more.

SDP is an improved batsman esp. post IPL 2019 and still improving (yet to reach his peak) .... so there is no comparison atm with SDP ahead - in a league of his own when it comes to power players (if he bowls, it is another bonus!)

chasing 280-300 against a quality side in odis , india 60-4, top 3 big names out, which combo will you trust to finish the game? Let us say None of the below is not an option

Iyer-Pandya

Pandey-Pandya

Iyer-Pandey

Iyer/Pandya/Pandey (only 1) playing along side someone else like Pant,Sky,Kishen,Samson etc.

Match is already done in that case.  Such wins come rarely for SC teams anyway as our tailenders basically can't even hold the bat & in India's case our Tail is one of the poorest.

Anyways these days come rarely & in next ODI WC is in 2023. Pandya may actually do Better.  We already got Surya & Kishan lined up if he fails in ODIs  Imo they both are better than Pandey.  Kishan is a left hander which we already lack in Middle order.  He can do something like Raina did in WC 2011

ODIs yes. He can play as slogger in ODIs.

T20Is - no.

It’s the opposite. T20s is where cameos become way more important than in odis. We are talking about a player who has made a career out of cameos.

Below is the team to be developed for 2023 WC

Agarwal

KL

Kohli

SKY/Kishan/....

Samson/Kishan/....

SDP

The above assuming that Dhawan and Rohit would be past their competitive best by 2222 with fans asking for their retirement  :dontknow:

Jadeja/Sundar/Tewatia/....  (or someone in form)

Saini

Bumrah

Another pace bowler or Bhuvi  (assuming Shami will mostly be playing tests in the next 2 years with focus on WTC)

Spinner - Chahal, Chahar, ....

so we are going with 7-11 with tailenders or guys who can’t add momentum and are stuck with cameo players like Pandya,Samson,Sky all who are not known to play big knocks.

That’s going to be a recipe for disaster against top bowling sides like Aus,Eng,Sa,Nzl or even against competent bowling lineups like Pakistan.

These are the best talents in terms of match winning abilities that we have atm .... Opportunities to play big knocks depends upon batting positions

Your assessments stem from outdated concepts which may include thinking that playing 6-7 Gavaskar is a better than playing 6-7 Richards .... and supporting Rohit, who is a known failure in the lower middle order (while assuming that those who are actually successful in lower middle orders to be cameo players, and when those guys can rake up good averages too if batting in the top order regularly) .... you need to update your software :winky:

We should look to develop a team like this for 2023 ODI World Cup:-

Rohit Sharma

Shubhman Gill

Virat Kohli

Shreyas Iyer

KL Rahul(wkt)

Hardik Pandya

Abdul Samad

Ravindra Jadeja/Bhuvi/any other pacer

Navdeep Saini

Yuzvendra Chahal

Jasprit Bumrah

In squad, the other names should be Rishabh Pant/Ishan Kishan, SKY and Prithvi Shaw.

Samson, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Rahul Tewatia are good for T20 cricket only.

that would be a question for @zen :phehe:

Anyways he gets into both my LOI sides hands down as a utility player he is if he bowls but as a pure batsman I have my doubts in odis.

Yes and Yes. He is the only genuine six hitter in our team. We have a lot of accumulators, nudgers, pushers and kaptaan Kohli is the new King of this kind of cricket. Him and SKY are the only players that I see can rotate strike and smash 6’s now and then. Samson on a good day but Pandya >> All at the moment.

Below is probably the inning (45 off 22) v NZ (smashed Boult too) that started SDP's march upwards as a batsman:

Followed it up with Man of the Tournament level performance in IPL 2019, and then some good hitting in WC2019 and IPL2020

the answer lies in numbers - he has gotten 25 innings in 40 matches in which he has faced 210 balls means not even 10 balls a game on Avg ......which shows how much time our top 4 waste .

If u wanna dig deep into international stars t20 stats even ben stokes have awfull stats in t20 .

The question isnt what he has done ?? it shud be is there anyone else who can do what he can

IMO, IPL > pointless bilaterals (ODIs & T20s) now. In multi teams T20s, he only played in WC16 (his debut yr?) where he won us the famous game v BD. Could have been promoted up the order v WI in SF (did not get to bat)

In IPL, his performance is there for all to see.
