Sorry for the click bait title. But the continuous omission of Joe Root from Eng top T20 XI & the way T20 cricket has advanced at a rapid pace since the last T20 world cup, has got me thinking about need of accumulators in T20 side.

A great T20 side like MI has one who plays the anchor i.e. Rohit & even he is a six hitting machine when set. Similarly, England who are numero uno in the format have Dawid Malan for that role, while others around him just blaze away in quintessential T20 approach of recent times.

Indian team has three players who have similar modus operandi : Rohit, Rahul & Virat. All three want to open in T20 cricket for maximum impact. But obviously all three cannot open. In an ideal T20 setup, even 2 anchors are more than enough, so India are already disadvantaged with their lineup.

So, in this background & considering how his middle overs batting was exposed in the recent IPL, is Virat Kohli really needed in India's T20 XI?

Please discuss, provide counter or favorable arguments.

IMO Hardik, Samson, Rahul, Pant/Kishan & SKY should be part of India's best T20 XI. It doesn't matter if we lose but these are the personnel ideally suited to prosper in the format. So, that leaves space for one of Rohit & Virat :police:

Rohit

Kohli

SKY

Kishan/Pant

Pandya

Tewatia/Samad

Bhuvi

Chahal

Natarajan

Bumrah

I am surprised you didn't keep Rahul in your XI. I think he has been the T20 batsman in the world in last 2 years. He definitely boosted stats with some ordinary innings in this IPL but before that he has been a match winner.

Goodness graciuos!!

Ipl has really gotten into the minds of some fans here.Lets see what these ipl shooperstars do when they face full strength aus in t20s.Lol

Abhi tum log ko reality check chahiye hai,bas sabr karo milne vaala hai.

Kohli will be our best player in t20s vs aus and your ipl nobodies will get exposed ,wait and watch. That guy is the GOAT t20i batsman and here we are talking about removing him. These SKY's ,samad's will fall flat on their face in international cricket.

Samad is 19 ffs..  Why are you comparing him with Kohli?  Both have different roles.

This is just a discussion thread. You are in favour of Virat's selection, some may bring counter argument.

But this thread is based on the recent trends of T20, not just IPL. Even 20 ball 25 run innings is a potential match losing innings. The limited point is all of the top 3 cannot be anchors in a T20 lineup. It doesn't matter who misses out in the end but Virat is definitely not indispensable to this India T20 side.

Actually, I just forgot him somehow watching Samson's name first up. If I play Samson at top order, then we need Kohli at 3 because Samson is very inconsistent. Updated top 6:-

Rohit

Rahul( Samson as backup)

Kohli

SKY

Pant/Kishan( depending on form)

Pandya

But I think after WT20, 2021, Kohli should retire himself from T20s.

I am a huge fan of Virat the batsman. I truly believe if Rohit the captain had Virat at 3, he would t20 WC.

I think that's not happening. Either Virat will play as captain or nor play at all.

Kohli must play simply because of his WT20 record (apart from one season he was never good in IPL), he has always found a way to peak during those tourneys esp must-win matches. His future in this format can be discussed after 2021 T20 WC.

For T20 WC in India:

Rohit(c)

Rahul

Kohli

SKY

Kishan/Pant/Sanju

Hardik

2 out of Krunal/Tewatia/Sundar

D Chahar

Varun C for his mystery (maybe R Chahar and Saini as backup options)

Bumrah

Rahul should be instructed to play freely and not get bogged down, relieving captaincy responsibility may remove clutter from Kohli's mind

T20 cricket has changed a lot ever since even the last T20 world cup. Not only Rahul, even Virat has to play freely.

Since we are hosts hope we tweak the pitches a little bit, make them 160 decks instead of 180-200, Not unsporting by any means (ICC curators will oversee but can't object), just more bat-ball balance. WI, Eng are more vulnerable on two paced pitches. Suits our team better.

Well last time India tried that with NZ with disastrous results. But you are right 160ish scores is where Virat & some other batsmen of ours feel comfortable

NZ match saw a rank turner, we should avoid extreme of anything. Just a bit more sluggish, lower bounce, offering more turn than normal Indian pattas, we have enough experience on the back of 10 IPL seasons. Teams like Pak, SL, BD maybe even NZ, Aus will do well on such pitches but it will also amplify our strengths, hide our glaring weaknesses and let's be honest WI/Eng will be the teams to beat.

2016 T20 WC was 4 years back also this was the period when Kohli hit his peak in all 3 formats.  Either he gives up captaincy to Rohit & play freely.  That is the only way I think.  In IPl & before that in NZ T20 games he was not up to the mark.
