Samson and Sky. Samson showed his class today. He can play off the back foot to pacers and has amazing hitting range. He will develop well if he was under MI or CSK. Don't put him in RCB :facepalm:SKY has a great IPL and deserves a chance. I somehow dont see it happening with rat at the helm. Pandey is a has been and Iyer cant handle bounce. And Iyer is not the same player that Raina was in his prime to ignore the short ball problems

Problem is that the TM management vision is not changed . First we need a TM & Selectors who want aggressive play  in short format as the Guru mantra.

Once this becomes the goal of TM & Selectors , things will start falling in place as far as selections go .

How difficult it is to pick Samson , Padikkal , Shaw, Pant, SKY , Ishaan as the pool to be tried in T20  along with Rohit , KL & Virat if the GOAL is clearly set .

But we should also remember we will not find success straight away . New players may take couple of years to become consistent . But once these people are given chances

and are sure of what is expected of them , at least 2-3 out of that pool should make it .  Crucial thing is give them longer time in the team

Do not see this happening till 21 WC ,  But after  failure in WC21 , we should start doing this.

Remember ENG started with this policy around 2015 but real success started  around 2018 . Once it becomes clear to every batsman what is the vision of TM , each of the newcomer will try to be playing with the same mindset to earn selection and hence lot of practice in that area, Hence going forward you will have more supply of players  with aggressive mindset  . Thats what England is reaping the benefit now with great bench strength of attacking players.

What is impressive about Samson is here is a guy who is trying to cement his spot, comes in plays fearless cricket, gets 25 of 14 odd balls and still tries to smash it.

He can be our Glen Maxwell

You only need one parameter to select players of T20 squad i.e. six hitting. Select guys with that potential.

Samson

Kishan

Pant

Pandya

SKY

Iyer

Iyer is not a bad back up. SKY is must in the side purely because he is not your conventional batsman & can bring inventivenes in the batting line-up.

Manish Pandey is a very good cricketer but the game has advanced at rapid pace & players like him will struggle to make impact, especially when he will not get top 3 slots.

I found myself agreeing with most of this.

However, If you put aside the 'talent' rankings and just add up the rankings for each player that you have given, (lower number implies 'higher' ranking):

Samson: 1 + 4 + 4 = 8

SKY:  1 + 3 + 3 = 7

Iyer:  2 + 1 + 4 = 7

Pandey:  3 + 2 + 2 = 7

For a T20 team, given that we have Kohli as a reliable 'anchor' already, and KLPD who can switch to that mode whenever required, we don't need "consistency" as much as the ability to score quickly, so I would go for Samson (biased when it comes to him though), and SKY.

Pandey is a better ODI bat than a T20 bat, and would only make my T20 XI if Kohli is out, and likely not even then.

Iyer gets edged by Samson easily in terms of the level of faith I have in the ability to handle variety of bowling especially pace.

I think time to move on from Pandey in T20’s.

in ODis I think he is a good back up for Iyer/Rahul in the middle order.

Also can Sky and Samson build innings in a odi format also needs to be seen.

Someone like DK  looks a million bucks once in a while in T20s as well.

1st of all breakdown in formats

My opinion about these indviduals

  • Samson top 3 players, anyone has doubt check his IPL stats at 3 n other positions
  • SKY- only for t20
  • Pandey- upgrade version of rahane (who gets stuck against slow bowling)
  • Iyer- upgrade version of rayudu (bounce is his problem , this is a very very serious problem)

Iyer n pandey are not t20 players

Need to back Samson for all these 3 games plus England series as well.  In the next game on flat Sydney get him to open & use field restrictions.

Have a feeling SKY will get picked for T20s against England after all the blowback selectors received.  Kishan might be a dark horse as well.  If Iyer or Pandey fare poorly anymore it might be done for them in T20Is.

Samson and SKY in T20s.

In ODIs, it has to be only one as other guy is KLR and I will go with Shreyas in that format.

Indian selectors have always selected "ODI" type batsmen and rewarded them with spots in the T20 team.  Pandey is a classic example - he is a misfit in T20, but is a very competent ODI bat.  But he keeps getting the 'consolation prize' of a T20 slot because there's no room for him in the ODI setup.

This is the biggest problem.  And that's why a guy like SKY has simply no shot to make the Indian team.  Other teams have often selected T20 specialist batsmen.  India have never done so - only if the player offers something in addition to batting - either parttime bowling or 'keeping.

one redeeming quality of Iyer and to some

lesser extent Pandey is, even when they are struggling they seem to limp their way  to 20’s and 30’s. Sometimes runs do matter as well let’s say it’s a tricky pitch and 225-275 can be defended.

Pandey’s time is running out. Iyer is 25 and has an average of 47 and sr of 100 in ODis, no way he needs to be dumped. May be keep him around till he slowly learns % cricket and gets better and better. The talent is clearly there and body of work in domestics as well.

I will certainly go with him in ODIs.

In T20s, we need to find a way to move on from both. Time to persist with Samson at 4.
