maniac Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 Not just batsman, but as an overall cricketer Batting ODis Kohli>Williamson>Root> Smith (not counting his clutch ability in critical games) Tests Smith>Kohli>Williamson>Root T20 Kohli>Root>Williamson>Smith bowling Root>Williamson>Smith>Kohli Fielding Smith>Williamson>Root>Kohli Captaincy Williamson>Smith>Kohli> Root Overall ??? Majestic Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 (edited) Virat Kohli. He is a GOAT all-format batsman and the greatest Asian test captain of all-time. He has 33 test wins which puts him ahead of any other Asian captain that played the game. I don't think others are comparable to him, he is literally one of the greatest batsman of all-time in 150 years of cricket history. Edited January 29, 2021 by Majestic

I was following along fine but then that’s the part which would make me rethink the entire post in a different context. Stan AF 1
maniac Posted January 29, 2021 Author Posted January 29, 2021 To clarify this is about the best cricketer not best batsman. For example would Indian team be better with say Williamson or Root, who can also bowl and are safe catchers? While definitely they are a downgrade from Kohli the batsman in LOI’s, would India benefit or lose more in a hypothetical exchange situation?

As a batsman it’s obviously Kohli especially in LOI where he is heads and shoulder above others. Also his fitness standards might be new for Indian cricketers but Williamson, Root,Smith etc are natural athletes since a young age and have a much more evolved training than us at all levels.

Serpico Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 Steve Smith easily. Best of the lot in tests, can be very clutch in LOIs, no problem playing under leadership of someone else, great fielder and safe catcher, can roll his arm when needed, is very flexible in playing at difference positions, gives a lot of importance to away tours and won't shirk from practice games which can be good influence on youngsters.. honestly only downside I can see is his sandpaper saga and that he won't rack up too many runs and centuries in bi-lateral LOIs which is still fine, more practice for other younger batsmen to step up After Smith, Williamson will add most value to your team with his good leadership and personality. He offers lesser than smith, batting wise but he might be better than him in other attributes and overall influence. He also got no problem playing under other leaders and is flexible with his batting position from what we see in ipl. Despite the captaincy issue with Ross taylor, they seem to get along pretty well, no unnecessary drama. Cricspin 1
Norman Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 T20 Kohli>Root>Williamson>Smith Captaincy Williamson>Smith>Kohli> Root Williamson and Smith both are better T20 batters than Root. Root is a better captain than both Smith and Kohli....
Norman Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 Overall has to be Smith though no doubts whatsoever. GOAT material in Tests. .Absolutely clutch in ODI big games...'Good' T20 player too... Serpico 1

"150 years of cricket history".. ODIs are only been around 45 years aren't they? T20s are 16 years.. if you are talking about the 150 years, Test cricket occupies most of that space and Smith is clearly head and shoulders above Kohli as a test batsman. So how is he not comparable? If anything Kohli is not comparable since there have been plenty of test batsmen better than Kohli where as Smith is only next to bradman, sobers etc
Serpico Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 Kohli is fantastic in Aus which seem to cover all the cracks in his records in the eyes of his fans.. he still averages 50+ in only three countries. Root averages 50+ in 6 countries, Kane and Smith average 50+ in 5 countries. And no need to talk about his LOI feats in important games.. maybe people need to slow down before talking about 150 years stuff. If I have a weak team with not too many class batsmen, I would want my premier batsman to be great in most countries.. great in a couple of countries and average in the rest will be disastrous for a weak team (luckily we got a very strong team) Cricspin, Indwin and vijaydude 3
Lone Wolf Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 I'll take Smith but Kohli is better overall. Though I like the way Root bats just coz he has more strokes among Top 4.
R!TTER Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 Depends - do you rate Smith's four 50+ scores in WC "KO games" over Kohli's entire ODI career, how about Smith's insane Ashes 2019 away from home? Right now, even if Smith's way behind Brat in T20I, overall I'd say the Oz maverick is ahead. Though I do expect Brat to have a longer career & probably not a huge drop in output, provided he gives up captaincy in a timely manner!
zen Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 (edited) Smith is probably among the top 3 batsmen of all time in tests with Bradman & Sobers. Will make it to my test AT11. Others on the list will probably not ... Therefore, if I have to pick one, it is Smith Edited January 29, 2021 by zen

If anything Kohli is not comparable since there have been plenty of test batsmen better than Kohli where as Smith is only next to bradman, sobers etc Kohli is an all-format legend. In this era and basically what I mean is modern era, it is your performance across all formats which matter. Test cricket obviously gets the highest priority but when someone is an ATG basically in every format, then he deserves the nod over the rest. Smith is a legendary test batsman but he is not more than just a good LOI batsman who is behind Kane and Root in that format. It also needs to be understood that Kohli is also the most influential cricketer of this generation. The pressure is generally on the home crowd when Kohli is present in the visiting side's camp. He knows very well how to get into skin of the opposition players. This is why Langer kept praising him highly when India stepped up in Australia. Bradman, Sobers, Viv and Tendulkar are legends but Kohli's name will also be mentioned in the same vein as those legends when he will retire. He pretty much swept most of the ICC awards of the decade 2010-2019. Probably same applies for Smith in tests but Kohli will be regarded as the most influential player of this generation.
